  2. Hey, I have a problem and its hasn't bugged me alot until I am starting to use my whammy alot. My G string goes out of tune all the time weither im using my whammy or not (just way faster and worse with whammy) and all my other strings stay in tune just fine like.. i use whammy for 10 minutes... everything is in tune but g string is out a step. Can anyone diagnos this? What did i do wrong in my setups? How can i fix this? thanks
  3. How much do you guys float your strat trem? How many steps? thanks
  4. I just got these old single cpoils out of an old kramer from the 80s, decide to pot them before putting themin my strat. So I put them in my strat and they sound uber bright and shitty tone. I cant get them to sound half decent, I have changed the pups height to every possible height. I dont know what is going on, can anyone figure it out? What did I do?
  5. I have a couple questions about refinishing, hopefully you guys can help me out. 1. What guitars come with laquer on them new? Gibsons, Fenders, Kramers? Do they come with laquer? Or is more like, some companies use it and some dont? For what reason would you put laquer on, is it for a protection? 2. whats grit sandpaper should you use on a maple body right before putting on sealer? 3. What guitars use primer? I heard that older fenders dont? do most companies use it? 4. Once sealer is on do you have to use fine sandpaper on it? Once primer is on do you have to you fine sandpaper on it? Once paint is on do you have to use fine sandpaper on it? thanks
  6. mmm ok, I guess i wont be able to fix the wires. But, is it even possible to take off the cover?
  7. mmm Im going to have to take the back part off anyways if i want to put it in a gibson or fender... its got this mounting metal cover thing because i got it on a kramer without a pickguard. so any ideas for taking it off?
  8. mmm its a USA, so how would I fix the extremely short wires? just wrap a new wires aroudn the ends and tape around it? and what if i dont have the same gauge wire? thanks
  9. I need to change the wires on a Bill Lawrence L-500R, I unscrewed the 2 screws in the back of the metal thing it is covered in and I can figure out how to get the pickup out. please help thanks
  10. hmm what if i dont have the same gauge? Will it still be ok?
  11. I have a pickup that has really short wire. Can i just wrap the end of fit around any electronics wire than wrap electrical tape around where they are connected to make the wire longer? Will that work? Or is there special wire or something I am supposed to do? thanks
  12. I checked out the link Southpa, and it doesnt seem to have my problem... because when i turn up my gain it squeels... I cant stop it by muting the strings or anything.
  13. mm thanks, well I played it at normal volume levels and they squeeled... just not at low levels. Even the pickup I didnt touch or change did it... Should I try putting the new strings on and test it.. or should I rip her open and trouble shoot?
  14. I just swapped some pickups in one of my guitars (highway one fender strat) and I plugged it in to test (without strings on) and it is ok seems fine... they make noise when i tap on them... but when i turn it up a bit it squeels like a pig getting stabbed. Could this be because I'v got no strings on it? I replaced the bridge and middle pickups with pups from a kramer from the 80s to test them out. And the neck pup (the one i didnt touch) also squeels. Can anyone help me out with this? Another question... I couldnt get the soder off of the pots, so I had to clip the old pickup wires than soder the new ones onto. How cant I get old soder off pots? Is my soder pen thing, not hot enough? thanks
  15. Question 2 - to shim a neck.. like what does it fix? why would you shim a neck?
  16. Ok, thanks guys im goign to try some stuff out on it and get back to you, hopefully i can fix this. Can you guys answer my other questions? I will copy paste them from my first post. Ok, this is a gernal question about guitars action. Im wonder if its possible t get some guitars action lower than others. Like, all strats I have played generally have a higher action... and all Ibanez or Jackson I have played ussually have a very low action... Do these new modern style guitars have the ability to to go lower than fender strats without farting out in bends...? Or can you get a Fender strats action just as low, without gaining any extra consequences? Last question... With a guitar how do you know when you need a shim? Like what tells you when you need one... what is wrong with a guitar when it needs a shim? And what a bout an advanced setup book? any recommendations I already can setup quite well, but im looking for more advanced tips and tricks.
  17. Hey, I will check out that book^ and thanks for the replies. Ok, well its a ibanez guitar with aicensid floyd rose. I had to but some piece of a card cut out under the nut to put it to the proper height, and I have set the truss rod. The thing that concerns me, Is that the action at the headstock end frets are real low and at the body end frets it is really high.... like to extremes... they are to different. I want the action to be low as possible so I did that except it is very high at the body end frets. Hopefulyl you can help me with that info Mike, I can post some pics if not. thanks BTW, im looking for a good guitar setup/maintance... not a basic one, but mroe advanced, I dont mean guitar repair, just more advanced guitar setup and maintanance, I have read to many intro ones. Is that oen you suggested good for this? oh, and can someone take a look at those other questions I had^^
  18. Hey, Im having a problem with one of the guitars I am working on. I also have a couple general "action" questions from after. Ok, I set up the guitar truss rod and all, but it seems that the action is very low at the headstock end of the neck, and it is way to high at the body end of the neck. I know it should be a little bit, but it is to much. Im wondering hwo this can be fixed, I am thinking some kind of shim could fix it? Any help would be appreciated. 19. hmm well is theyre anyway I can test or find out if i need grain filler for sure? Im trying to look it up and find out.
  20. Ill have them on monday or tuesday. In the mean time i have a question about the truss rod that may solve the problem. Most of the instructions i have read for adjusting the truss rod tlel you hat height the string needs to be at the 6th fret when the first and 17th fret are fretted. im thinking that my problem might be with the truss rod? can someone tell me what measurments i can do to check the action after adjusting the truss rod. WHat measurements at other frets like not only the 6th but can i check what it should be down the neck more around 15th fret what should the height be?? thanks
  21. Yeah, It feels smooth to me. How can I tell If I need grainf iller or not?
  22. Oh boy, Ill have some pics up in a day or 2, its my friends guitar.
  23. I just am finishing up sanding the body of an old kramer. Im not sure what to do with paint and grain filler. What kind of grain filler is the best? can anyone hook me up with exactly what I will need to get, brushes, fillers, paint. Can I get it all from stew mac? whats the best type of grain filler. can I use a spray bottle for paint? Whats the best paint? I'm going to paint it black. Also, I dont even know if i need a grain filler. can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is? http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/5869/imgp1784ng2.jpg http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/4619/imgp1787ot9.jpg http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/4305/imgp1789xz6.jpg http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/4279/imgp1790oc1.jpg http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/2711/imgp1793yb4.jpg http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/1361/imgp1794vn8.jpg http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4001/imgp1777da8.jpg Nobody can seem to agree on the type of wood it is.
  24. Alright, I will take a picture and heres another description of the problem in the mean time. I want to get the action lower at the higher frets. when I get the action to a point that I like at the higher frets, the lower frets action is than to low. and when I put the lower frets action to a good spot it makes it to high at the higher frets. Hopefully you guys can understand that description a little better? I need to some how make the neck flatter so the action can be good all along the fretboard. thanks for you help.
  25. Can Anyone tell me if this problem can be fixed by shimming? The action is to high at the body end of the neck.
