  1. Man I LOVE that white!! My next J Bass is going to be white like that (when I finish the strat).

I'm bidding on some mahogany right now for SG and an LP projects this spring. I got my butt kicked bidding on some last week! Hopefully I'll be able to win this stuff. My local hardwood guy can't seem to come up with any mahogany so ebay is so far my only reasonable outlet for it.

  2. I've been using high gloss nitro then wetsanding it to a dull smooth finish with great success. It stays slick and doesn't "gum" up when you start to sweat like gloss tends to. This way I don't have to spray gloss on the body and headstock and the tape it off and switch to satin for the back of the neck.

Since I play regularly I haven't had any problems - even with Wisconsin's hot and humid summer weather. Another thing to consider is the material you use for the neck. Since I use rock maple this works well. Some exotics (like my Grind) don't require any finish other than a light oiling about once a month.

  3. I have some UHMW and access to a lot more and thought about using it for nuts. Has anyone used this for nuts before?

It's relativelt dense and very slick as far as plastics go and I thought if it wasn't too soft it would be great material.

nyjbkim - do you have any input on this? You seem to be a font of technical info on various materials. :D

  4. Don't mind at all. You're thinking on the same lines I am actually. I was thinking a "camo" tree bark type finish like Brian had mentioned. I know they have camo colors available in enamels at the hardware store, but I am unsure of latex availability. I may have to mix some up but I do plan on using the spray bottle approach.

Thanks for the input! That's why I like this forum - we all get to throw ideas around and come up with a solution that works for all of us. Some of the forums I've seen seem to have 3 or 4 "know-it-alls" that don't accept input or experimentation from others. To me that doesn't make for a very good learning environment for others.

  5. I haven't forgotten this project! Too busy with the holidays to get anything accomplished this week. I am on the holiday rotation at work and have to work today :D but have a good start on redoing the body taking a different approach. I should have this wrapped up by Sunday.

    Happy New Year to all!

  6. For a second I thought I was on the BMW forum!! They have an ongoing battle about this. My take is this:

When I was under 30 I'd take a manual. Now I'm almost 40, gimme the auto. I have a "sport" mode in mine which raises the shift points and keeps it out of 5th gear. Works great for me and it's just as quick as a manual without worrying about toasting a clutch every time I play. BTW this is also an ongoing argument - is it really as quick as a manual?? It works for me that's all I care about.

  7. how's she play? looks like a bit of a radius on the fretboard for my style, but has the appearance of an "i love everyone and everyone needs to finger me" sort of bass. the kinda bass you don't wanna play...just hug...

She plays great! I just put her together this afternoon and need to tweak the action down a hair, but it's not high by any means. I like my action set looooow so even an 1/8" seems too high for me.

As far as hugs......my wife is never real turned on by my work, but she saw this after I put it together and her first words were (I'm NOT kidding) "you're not selling that are you?"

    Cool! :D

  8. No time to try anything today. The J bass tipped over and got a nice scratch down the side last night that had to be repaired. I also finished my entry for the February G.O.M. (besides the J bass) - priorities!! :D

Oh, yeah, and I sold my snowmobile today! That took up a good chunk of the day but gave me several thousand $$ to spend on guitars!! B)

  9. Well since my first bass went over like a lead balloon I'll try this one.

I call her the Southern Pearl:

One piece South American Mahogany body

Hand rubbed lacquer (no machine polish on this one) Clear only - no stain

One piece rock maple neck (no separate fretboard)

Lo-Pro Bridge (I love this thing!)

    Grovers for staying in tune

    BassLines for getting loud

Presence Logo on headstock 'cause I made it myself!

This is IMO the best looking and by far the best sounding one I've made (this is #3). I made her curvy for comfort.

    No retinal damage this time?

  10. Thain, Geddy Lee, Flea, yep all great!

Don't forget Leon Wilkeson from Skynyrd. I never realized how much he carried the music for Skynyrd until I started playing bass. The guitars just seem to follow him and add some wild stuff in between his wild stuff. A great unsung bass player IMO. Master of the blues bass - check out "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" for one of his best bass lines.

  11. Welcome to the Forum!! :D

I agree with nyjbkim on 2 points. One is that hyunsu will probably be your best source of info on this and two is that it needs a repair. The bridge is the "link" between the strings and the top. Any gap in that link is going to affect your sound transfer and sound quality.

BTW this is not a difficult repair. There is a lot of information out on the net (and probably on this forum if you use the search) on repairing this. Basically you heat and remove the bridge, clean up the bridge and the top and reglue the bridge in place. Find a tutorial for the tools needed and a step by step procedure if you decide to do it yourself. If you prefer that someone else do it your local music stores should have someone capable of this repair.

Whatever you choose good luck and again, Welcome!!
