  1. Hey guys!!!!!! Do I need to remove the rest of the factory sealer before I put some sanding sealer on it OR will it be OK to put the sanding sealer on top of the factory sealer?
  2. Well guys, I just got through stripping ,,,,, or at least the first pass at the stripping process,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ALL the paint is off,,,,, 99% came VERY easily using a heat gun. the rest with a palm sander and a little scraping using a utility knife,, dragging it backwards................ there is still a little sealer on the body (dark areas), at least that's what I think it is,,,,,,, right guys??? ,,, is there any "good" way to get it completely off without using a chem ,,, other than sanding like I've been doing so far? OR do I need to get the sealer completely off if I'm going to paint it? The body is made up of five (5) pieces of wood so unfortunately I'd say it's definitely going to be painted and not stained. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2743.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2744.jpg
  3. C r a p, I guess I'll be using something else after all............ I guess I need to buy some rattle cans from stew mac or reranch............ OR buy some laquar and learn to use me spray gun,,,,, I hate to screw up this body though, I'd rather "learn" on a very plain solid body.
  4. "I have used DEFT and regular nitro with no problems." Which DEFT did you use exactly,, I can get DEFT products at Lowe's to so, was it Poly or Lacquer?
  5. Southpa, That's the type I'm thinking of using, you didn't need to buff it out, right? By the way,,,,,, It looks great! (I'm sure you've heard that many times)
  6. Thanks for the info,,, I've read it all,, I still have a question though,,,,,,,,, of all the threads/posts NONE specifically mention the type of poly everyone is using,,,,,,,,, the type I'm wanting to use is the plain old gloss polyurethane in spray cans like you'd buy at Lowe's to finish or refinish a piece of furniture,,,,,,,,, can or should you sand and buff out this type of poly or just leave it alone after the finial coat? The reason I ask is that any piece of furniture I've finished has had a pretty good gloss after the top coat is done..........
  7. Update,, it's looking like the builder of the neck MAY send me a Tele neck built of the same woods, we'll see,, we're still talkin' about this. Hopefully it'll work out BUT if he doesn't I think I might just bolt it up and see what I think of it,, heck, I cold always go back and "fix" it later IF I feel the need. Thanks for the replies guys!
  8. "Pickguards rule for stuff like this." I know a pickguard would do the "cover up" BUT I hate to cover ANY of this top.
  9. It can be seen, just not very easily.............
  10. Good point,,,,,,,,,,,, About my "local luthier",,,,,,,,,,, there are none.
  11. Mickguard, Thanks for the advice and the encouragement,,,,, I may try something like that ,,,,,,,,, The body is Ash and the top is Paduak, I have no source for either. I would have to shape each piece by hand as I don't have any sort of jig to do a neck pocket no have I EVER done a route of any kind on a guitar and I'd hate to make this my first and in turn ,,,, screw it up,,, so, IF I do this it'll be off the body when I do the cutting........... Anyone have some scrapes in either or both of these woods?
  12. Thanks for the replies guys,,, I'm just sick over this, I just know that these woods in this body and neck would have looked fantastic,, and I'm sure it would play fine BUT I think I may be a tad too "a n a l" about things fitting correctly to endure this marriage............. I may stick them together and see BUT at this point I guess I'm thinking of buying a Strat body for this neck and buying a Tele neck for this body,,,,,,,,, crap, CRAP, CRAP!
  13. Since some (not all) of the overhang at the end of the fingerboard will need to be trimmed off so I can fit a trim ring for the neck humbucker, I've thought about just living with it,,,,,,,, with some of the fingerboard overhang still being there you don't really see this "misfit" but you can see it if you're looking for it,,,,,,,,,,, and of course I know the if the neck fit nice and tight at ALL points it would be more stable and sustain better so I'd love to "fix" this if at all possible,,,,,,,,,, from my understanding, if I took enough wood out of the neck pocket to make the neck fit it then I'd need to move the bridge that same amount BUT the holes for the strings are already drilled so that would create a problem,,,,,, so again,,,, Any ideas guys? Any at all?
  14. Ok, I was stupid and didn't think about the problems with doing this,,, I recently bought this Tele Body off ebay and then turned around and bought this neck off ebay from another seller......................................... the neck fits great as far as width BUT the heel is rounded on the neck while the neck pocket is more or less squared off to receive a Tele neck heel,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you can't really it see much because of the overhang of the fretboard being longer since it;s a 22 fret neck BUT I don't like it,,,, is there ANYTHING I can do to make this better? I have a mighty mite 21 fret Tele that fits this body great BUT it's going on another build and I really wanted to use this neck on this body because of how the woods look with each other.... http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/75c8_3.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/c92d_3.jpg
  15. Hey, would one of you tell me the entire process if using poly, including exactly how to do the last part as far as what grit paper, compounds and so forth? please!
  16. I'm planning to use gloss polyurethane on a Thinline Tele I'm putting together, I didn't know I'd need to polish it at all when I got the final coat on it................. Are you sure about doing this step? Please tell me more if this is in fact needed because I want to do what will be best for the finished product.
  17. Thanks, I'm more of a humbucker guy right now,,, though I still like single coils there's something about that bucker sound or tone that appeals to me more now than at any time in the past. What about the bridge, which one would you go with and why?
  18. Thanks for the opinions guys, here's what it would look like with the above mentioned pickups, I was going to buy some gold rings but may go with black ones, what do you guys think? Also, which bridge would you use? The usa strat type has solid saddles BUT overall is lighter than the other bridge BUT the "other" bridge although being heavier has hollow saddles which are stamped and are lightweight themselves?
  19. Hi guys, I think I know what sort of answers I'll get but here goes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I'm building a Tele which with have two (2) humbuckers ,,,, I have these Seymour Duncan models on hands,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the first is a Alnico II pro APH-1 BRIDGE (7.85 ohms) and the second is a Seymour Duncan Custom 5 TB-14 (14.4 ohms) which is also a BRIDGE pickup ,,,,,, I was thinking of trying these out with the TB-14 at the bridge and the APH1 at the neck ,,, what do you guys think? I've never used either pickup before,,,,,,,,, should I just use one of them at the bridge and if so which one AND what other model would match up well will either of these? Thanks for the help, Terry
  20. Wow! That does look great ! ,,, looks much like this Godin Artisan ST that I have as far as overall shape, at least to me. Your's of course is much MUCH cooler.... I sure wish I could build one like it someday....
  21. Thanks for all the replies guys,,,, I'm getting "thegarehanman" to do this for me,, can't wait to get it back so I can assemble the guitar and play it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. Thanks but there's no way I could afford that much,, I think I'm about to get this worked out with another member guys. Thanks, Terry
  23. Hi guys, Long story short, I bought this tele type body last year thinking I'd finish it BUT I've had second thoughts, I really know down deep that I have no business trying this at this time,,, I have NO experience spraying finishes and this is in my opinion much too nice a body to "learn" on, so here's what I want to do,,,,,,,,,,,, I want to end up with the top being stained as close as possible to the shade of blue in the picture , the back and sides with no stain and all shot in clear gloss, and one other thing, I want a nice deep "belly cut". SO, who wants to do this for me? Here's the blue I want. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/dimasitele.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/dimasitele1.jpg Here's more pictures of the body: it's quilted maple top, and walnut body,,,,,,,,,,, http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2357.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2347.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2346.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2345.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/tkc58/100_2344.jpg
  24. Ok Guys, I'm FINALLY back,,,, been a LOT of stuff going on in my life and those of my family,,, anyways,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I finally have ALL of the parts to do this guitar now,,,,,,,,, BUT I've yet to buy the dye or stain nor have I bought the clear coat finish to protect it all........... here's the problem,,, I'm fairly sure I'll screw this up if I do it UNLESS I decide that I'll be satisfied with a "wipe on" finish,,, like a semigloss poly............... I know this would NOT be the best thing to do BUT I'd be absolutely sick if I messed this body up,,,,,,,, I should have started out doing a couple or three cheap pawn shop Strats till I got the hang of this ........................
