I hope this isn't too off topic but this had me wondering - are you placing it at the very end of the effects loop? I think they recommend that it be the very last thing before the power amp stage. Something seems wrong though by your description - it should present an obvious clarity to your sound.
yes i have it just like they reccomend it.
i think it might be due to the fact that my amp is already quite clear sounding.
the sonic maximizer just makes it sound over processed...i can see how it would help tighten up a loose low end like on a mesa though(for example)
Yeh, On a Solid State amp it probably wouldnt do much. But on a tube amp its great.. it tightens it up ALOT and gives it that Solid State attack I enjoy.

If your using cheap-o cables you got free from sam ash then keep it as short as possible. I used Hot Line 20' cables. Dont get scammed into buying "Gold Plated Cables" or any of that bs.

I feel your pain Kevan, I had my eyes on those as well

OK...at the risk of sounding lame, will someone please tell me the differences between the following kinds of metal:
Death
Black
Metalcore
Hardcore
Thrash
Back in the day, it was just "metal"...what's happened?
Death Metal - Bands like Cryptopsy, Suffocation and Nile, low tuned, fast, alot of trem picking usually gory lyrics... but not always.
Black Metal - sucks... lol but its these goons that wear clown makeup, sing about hating jesus and burn churches.
Metalcore - Bands like Unearth and All That Remains, mostly melodic, probably my favorite type of metal.. of course if you think atreyu's metalcore then i can see why you wouldnt like it..
Thrash - Old Metallic, Slayer, Exodus... cmon everyone knows what Thrash metal is

Ive heard clips of your rig, surprises me because you actually get a nice thick sound.. even though I hate scooped mids you mkae it sound good. Indeed, most tube amps are pretty "loose" but a proper noise gate can help tighten things up.. I know my ISP Noise Decimator does wonders for my 5150.
Different strokes for different folks.

Two.
the first one is a melodic metal band, we try to incorporate as much melody in our songs as possible, everything from 12 string acoustic, piano, to death metal.
The second is more of a side project, my bud needed a guitarist for his band after several failed attempts with others, this one is more thrash metal.

Please dont use a metalzone with a tube amp, try a nice tubescreamer.
my metalzone works great with my mode 4....just because you use a non tube gain,it does not take away the tube tone of the amp.
i preferred my zoom driver before it broke down...but it is also non tube
The mode 4 has a solid state preamp. Try using a metalzone or any other cheap-o distortion pedal with a tube poweramp... its no fun. Takes away alot of the tubes saturation and natural tone. I personally dont see the point of the hybrid amps with a tube preamp but solid state power amp, IMO it should be the other way around. A solid state preamp has a nice attack and overall tighter sound and a tube poweramp helps smooth out the typically harsh sound most solid state amps produce.
Im a bit of a tone freak though, everything has to be perfect for me to be happy

I looked up Dave's G-Major, and BBE thing. I'd like Dave to comment on the BBE, I can't quite figure out (by what I've read so far) it's usefulness in a Metal rig. Dave?
I know im not Dave, but I do have a BBE and can explain what it does.
It has two knobs, one "Low" and one "Process" what the low does is tighten up the low end, the process basically makes your highs smoother. It dosent sound like much but for $50 used this unit can do wonders for your sound, it kinda gives the amp this "scooped" sound but still has the ability to cut through in a live mix.

Marcel Coenen is cool too http://www.marcelcoenen.com/

Yes, the wait can be a pain.. but its a family run operation.

Its a nice amp, they go for cheap too! If your gonna play metal you'll want a tubescreamer infront for some added gain though.

Bill Lawrence XL-500, the pickups the Dimebucker is based off of..
the XL-500 is MUCH better than that Dimebucker, cheaper too!
