  1. I'm working on my own customized wiring scheme with a switch to get a series pickup option on a strat-style(3 singles) guitar. But a couple of pickup selections will cause the hot wire to be connected, but not their ground wires. Basically, I was just wondering what happens if a pickup's hot wire is connected, but its ground wire is not. Maybe it'll get extra noisy? I'm not sure, because I'm in the process of drawing the schematic, and I haven't done any "physical" wiring so far on this project. Thanks.
  2. how would a solid-bodied electric guitar made from oak (body) be like? how would it sound? I'm just curious
  3. hi, just wondering how well does a body stained with oil-based stain/dye accept a nitro clear finish? also, what about water-based stain with nitro? thanks in advance.
  4. Yeah, we use glossy all the time....we know the kids are just going to draw on it with crayons, so it's a whole lot easier to get clean. Never used nitro or poly over it...it would cost way too much to clear coat their whole bedroom. lol. if it wasn't obvious, i meant painting a GUITAR!!
  5. has anyone tried using acrylic latex paint (basically, the type of paints used for bedrooms) then lacquer over it with nitro or poly? is it possible? how's the result? i'm not sure how to get my hands on some better paint, like tinted lacquer or whatever. btw i live in canada, if you know of any good places for paints and stuff. also i'll probably need some white primer, what kinds are there? and where to get them? thanks
  6. i see, but how do I do this from scratch? and what are the steps and materials do I need? such as how to prep the wood and stuff.
  7. Hi, I quite a newbie at this stuff, but I need some help. How am I suppose to get this colour or finish on an ash body? The guy calls the colour 'Vintage Natural Ash', its from a Fender 52' Telecaster Reissue that I saw on eBay.
  8. alright, it'll hum-cancel similar to a strat position 2 or 4, but does the shorter distance improve the hum-cancelling? and would it sound anything like a 'real' humbucker?
  9. hey, i was just wondering if its possible to emulate a humbucker by combining 2 single-coils, like place them beside each other, and connect them to the same lug, that sorta thing. but if not, then what's the result? soundwise. thanks.
  10. ok, thanks guys for the advice. i've done my wiring now exactly to those diagrams and instructions, but for some reason there's still noise. however the tone pot does work now. Also I should mention that i've been testing the pickguard assembly detached from the body. Should I try testing it with the pickguard on the body? will it make a difference?
  11. I just did a humbucker style in this star grounding (guitarnuts.com) and had failure. I tore it all apart and ended up doing a Seymour Duncan wiring scheme. I also isolated my pots from the shield; by cutting the shielding back so that the shafts do not contact the shield. The only contact with the shield was the output jack (this effectively grounded the shield, plus the output jack ground and the selector switch ground are directly connected). The tone control was a puzzler. Again, the one that worked was the SD wiring style. Even then the tone control seems very minimal, it seemed to be either off or on; no gradual change. I tried other various ways I found on the web and they were worse. On my rewiring I checked for continuity throughout the whole system to make sure all was kosher. When I finally gave it a whirl it was dead quiet. My previous attempt was noisier and only quieted when I touched something metal on the guitar. I find electronics very frustrating. good luck hmm. thanks for the insight. could you please post up where i can find this SD wiring scheme? as well as other things i need to do. Thanks and also what should i do with the large capacitor?
  12. thanks greg for your input. but does that explain why my tone pot isn't responding? and while i do have a "star ground", which is on the right side of the yellow capacitor. The yellow cap is connected between the tone pot shell and the star ground. I'm still kinda confused about all this. Any more suggestions? and btw, i'm a newbie at electronics.
  13. help! i need some help with shielding my guitar! The noise hasn't improved, its slightly noisier. I've been using the guitarnuts shielding strat guide as reference to shield my guitar. Here are some details, when I touch any metal part it gets a bit quieter. The tone pot apparently doesn't do anything anymore, since there's no alteration in sound when i turn the knob. And I soldered one lead of the capacitor to the tone pot shell, since i tried clamping it to the bottom of the pot and it wasn't any better. Maybe there's something wrong with my "star" ground? or maybe i'm using the wrong terminals on the pots and pickup switch? here are some pics of it. http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u285/dr...69/IMG_2278.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u285/dr...69/IMG_2280.jpg http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u285/dr...69/IMG_2283.jpg
  14. does anyone know what style(size) of nut do the yamaha pacifica guitars (strat style) use. And also where can I find a replacement for it(maybe bone or tusq) rather than using this stock plastic nut. I've been browsing for guitar nuts but i don't know what type of nut fits it. I know that the nut width is 4.1mm (1 5/8 inches) here's an idea of the guitar: http://www.yamaha.ca/content/guitar/produc...cifications.jsp
  15. http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=...,42996&ap=1 OMG thanks so much man, i gotta check this place out!!!
  16. leather dye, huh? i could give it a try, but is it toxic (especially to the touch)? is it gonna make my guitar stinky? or wear off and leave my fingers with residue? and wes, i don't have the cash to blow, and also i'm just experimenting on my noob guitar and see what i can make of it
  17. come to think of it, i'm not sure if the vinegar trick will work on my rosewood fretboard. that's why i rather use something like the "black fingerboard stain" from StewMac's, but unfortunately they're not allowed to ship it to Canada. the aniline dye could be an option too, but i don't know where to get some, or whether or not its safe to have on a fingerboard, like.. it is toxic, harmful or pathogenic in anyway? cus you know, you're gonna be in contact with it quite often (fingerboard + fingers) any suggestions, people?
  18. yeah i know, but i'm trying to mod an already built guitar what about that steel wool + vinegar trick? is that any good?
  19. and btw, does anyone know if the laquer or aniline dye is toxic or not?
  20. i was reading the faux ebony trick article and i was wondering if the dye used would stain metal or plastic or not? the metal as in the frets and the plastic which is the nut and fret markers (i think its plastic? )
