  1. This is my first attempt at guitar refinishing and it turned out nice. I stole a 2001 Jackson RR3 with OHSC on eBay for $280. I was looking for an RR3 or better to do a polka dot "tribute" to Randy Rhoads. Jackson either has the RX10d polka dot or a Custom Shop....one is low end...the other too much $$ so I set out to make my own. I dismantled the guitar and sanded the body down. I used automotive paint for the project. I primed the guitar and then applied a white base coat. I did not have access to a polka dot "mask" so I used decals. This is VERY tedious as I wanted them to be symmetrical and that is easier said than done...especially on a guitar shaped like the Rhoads. Anyhow after the decals were on I applied the black coat. The decals were removed and the guitar cleaned of any adhesive and the clear coat was applied. I chose not to color sand and buff the guitar because I like the way it looks and down the road after it has some bumps and bruises I can color sand and buff and make it look new. I reassembled the guitar with creme Dimarzios (dp-100 and dp-103) like Randy Rhoads spec'd on his Sandoval V. I also used the black control plate (instead of chrome). The last touch was the "RR" truss rod cover from Fretsonthenet.com. After being patient and spending the proper time to set the guitar up I am very proud not only on how it looks but how it sounds and plays. My tribute to one of my guitar heros.
