  1. Heres a link to a guitar forum based in the UK. http://simnettguitars.co.uk/bb/index.php It's not as extensive as this forum but I found it very helpful with getting stuff over here (in the uk). Apart from that I use this forum (project guitar) because of the vast amount of experience that these guys have. There are also some awesome tutorials in the tutorials section of the web site. One thing I would suggest is if you can't do it in your head then dont touch the timber until you can. I made a neck out of 4 x 2 Pine it was good practice and the only real thing it cost me was time, but then it gave me experience.
  2. Nice one Desperateness is the catalyst for invetiveness or something like that
  3. If its on disc you try and going to a printers and see if they wil do it there. I had my plans copied, I went to a printers they couldn't do it but they put me in touch with someone who could
  4. Hi frag and welcome I just finished my strat bar a paint job I did mine from scratch including making the templates from plans that I bought . Try here for templates if your in the UK http://simnettguitars.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?p=784#784 There is a place in the states will try and find it for you. Found one http://www.guitarbuildingtemplates.com/electricguitar.htm I don't about anyone else but buying a template takes all the hassle out of making them, I couldn't get them at the time but knowing what time and effort they save would go for buying one. It does however take the " I built this completely from the plans " satisfaction out of it
  5. Just a small tip I had to improvise with. When I fitted my machine heads to the headstock, the bushes used to screw into the m-heads tightened before they came into contact with the wood. They were about 3 mm to long so I ground them down using a disc sander ( the type you use in your drill ) and some 120 grit paper. It left a nice neat finish on the ends (unlike cutting) and they screwed in first time
  6. I am not to sure what type of pick ups they are I got them of ebay until I can afford a decent set. There are 3 pickups 1 volume 1 tone and a 5 way selector switch . All came pre-wired, the pickups are peavy if that helps
  7. I did have a look at this but it says in part of its description "and for other 2 pickup guitars" would this work on a 3 pickup guitar. I am new to electrics therefore I don't know much on the electronics side of it.
  8. The body is 30 - 33mm thick with a strat pick guard I dont mind modding the pickguard just as long as I can get a switch in there.
  9. I need a 25mm deep selector switch may be able to go to 27mm or does any one have any ideas bout modifying another typr of switch, or even a slider switch?
  10. Thanks guys that's answered my questions. Nothing is routered on the body yet. The body is between 30 -35mm in depth, by the time I router out at least 15mm for the pickup assembly that only leaves me 15- 20mm for the anchor plate and springs, so I will only be able to fix the plate using 2 screws going into the body horizontaly ( along the guitar length, ) and no space left to secure it depth wise. I'm not to sure of the pressure put upon the springs ( and therefore the mounting screws) when everything is set up. But i'm happy to get a hardtailed bridge anyway.
  11. If the hard tail just screws onto the body and you feed the strings through from the back of the guitar then I will get a hardtail, is that how the work? I wanted to do a hard tailed strat when I realised the thickness of my body would not be enough, its just the way the guy explained it ito me in the shop led me to believe it couldn't be done cheers
  12. I have a a 35mm thick guitar body based on a strat. The body is to thin for a regular trem block bridge so I told the guy in my local guitar shop that I was going to leave off the block and screw the bridge straight to the body. He then said that the block is called a tone block and was needed for the tone otherwise the sound would be bad. But I have seen hard tails bridges for strats and as far as I can see they work the same way that I mentioned above. Can any one clarify this for me. Screw the bridge assembly to the guitar body . insert 6 ferrules on the back of the guitar into the holes (that have been drilled out for the strings) and thats basically it .
  13. HI Guys. I have 95% finished my neck. It is Ash with an American Oak fingerboard. I am going to tung oil the fretboard. I just want some confirmation on the neck. I would like it as smooth as poss. From what I have read "grain filler" brings the rest of the wood up to the hieght of the grain, levels the timber out. (Not having used it before, I just used to put lots of coats of varnish on my work until it felt level) I want a nice natural finish so I was thinking of grain filling the neck with clear filler and then sand it with a 300-400 grit paper then start applying the varnish until happy. Its the grain filling bit I'd like assistance on Cheers
  14. That is so sweet. I want to blend my pickguard in with the body but wasn't sure how it would look. But looking at that I will try and think of some ideas within my painting limits. Nice Job
  15. In theory it will work. But the chip extends over the center of the dot it is superglued in, so if the drill isn't alligned perfectly it will look even worse
  16. I have set all of my dots into the fretboard, glues them in using super glueand everything was looking good. Then I noticed after I had started to radius the board a small section of dot had broken away. Even after radiusing it still notices. I could live with it but the fretboard is looking so nice after oiling it ( thanks to supernova and wez ) that I am a little reluctant to try and take it out. I have tried ti fill it with super glue and mop dust but to no avail, I thought of drilling it out with a small bit but if the glue has done it's job well it will end up looking worse than it does now. Any ideas Crying or Very sad
  17. I bought my plans off these people, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STRAT-STYLE-GUITAR-M...bayphotohosting These are full size, cut out the shapes, wall paperpaste them onto your template material and cut around them. If your concerned about messing up the cut and plans, get them photocopied and use the copies to paste with
  18. I never thought of Googleing it , Thanks very much
  19. HI Ppl I am starting to think about routering out the cavity for the pickups etc on my Strat styled guitar. I have the scratchplate. Being that I made the routering template myself, I want to make sure that the scratch plate , when the pick ups are fitted will allign correctly. If any correction is to be be made I would rather make it to the template before the routering. I have seen two different styles of pickups 1/ http://www.adirondackguitar.com/pickups/bill_l/testim15.jpg 2/ http://www.maverick-music.com/ProdImages/f...tratpickups.jpg can anyone give me the physical dimensions ( at the widest points ) of these two. I can then make templates and check to see if I need to alter my other template Cheers
  20. Thanks for your help guys. I thought it was the radius but just needed to make sure because of the size of the frets. Didn't know about the undersize part tho, so that the ends dig in . Cheers
  21. I have a packet of pre Radiused frets with no information on the pack what what the radius size is. I drew curved lines with 4" radius, 6" 8" and 12". The frets match up with the 8"" radius line, so does that mean I have to buy a 16" radius block ( 16" being the circumference of the circle) or an 8" radius block being the actual radius of the fret, (which I am not sure I have come across ) I am not sure how these blocks are described or sold, by the radius of the circle , or the circumference of the circle. If any one knows can you also tell me where I can get one in the UK Cheers people
  22. I have a Tanglewood odyssey acoustic guitar, Which are basically Ovation copies, they have round bodies. I dropped mine and then a piece of 6 x 4 foot chipboard fell on top of it, the neck broke off but fortunately it is a clean break. I have cleaned everything up and basically just needs glueing, but what type of glue must I use. It appers as is two types of adhesive has been used a clear one to glue the fretboard to the body, and a whitish yellow type for the neck joint, this stuff allmost looks like filler. I live in the UK so if you can point me to the suppliers that would be good many Thanks JayCee
