I am pondering getting a Gibson SG. The Faded Brown seems like a nice value guitar that looks nice. The problem . . . I do not want to trash the guitar and let it get more worn. So I am wondering a couple of things:
1) What finish do they put over Gibson SGs? I know it is a VERY thin coat if anything over the stain. Is it at all durable or is it as flimsy as I think it is?
2) What prep work would I have to do before applying some sort of protective clear coat? Any sanding, or just put some sort of oil or lacquer right over the top?
3) Would something like Tung Oil work for any sort of protection against minor scratches and wear to the wood, or should I just stick with a lacquer clear coat? I am thinking Tung Oil might be nice for the neck, but would like some sort of protection against the accidental dinging of the guitar.
4) How many coats (of whatever you put for question #3) would be advisable to put on the guitar?
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Sorry about that. Any chance one of you Mods would be able to move the original message to the proper section on finishing? I do not want to double-post.
