  1. I was wondering if wiping a thin layer of shellac on a neck is an okay neck finish?I was wondering how it would stand up to a lot of play.I was going to tung oil it but I like the feel of a thin shellac coat that's been steel wooled.
  2. I spray in my basement.I have a 3ft x 3ft window with a 3ft x 3ft square fan inside of it.I hang my guitar about 3 ft from the fan. Then I made a removable wall with a drop cloth that is about 10x6x6.With a very small fan on the floor blowing up lightly to make sure everthing moves back to the big fan. It works so well that you can go there 5 minutes after without your mask and smell nothing. On the outside I have a cardboard box that gets most of the lacquer. The rest goes into the alder bushes. It has enough pull that I made one for sanding in and it pulls out the real small micron stuff with no problem.
  3. I ordered my second Xl-500 from Bill and it only took 3 weeks. They might be making a few more at a time to cut down on the wait. Those pickups are wicked passive pickups.
  4. I understand RR getting his votes. Wow.Only Three votes for Tony Iommi. That's funny. I think guitarists should be judged by their generation and what they had to influence them in their own time. I got to be honest.I don't like anything Ozzy did after Sabbath. I liked Rhodes work.Thought it'd be better without Ozzy:lol:
  5. I'm building an explorer and I was wondering about the edges. Are they supposed to be rounded over like a strat? Also, anyone ever see a carve top explorer?
  6. I played everyday.(Every single day)For the first 5 years of playing. I felt it was almost shameful not to play. Then I cut my index finger fishing one day while changing a sparkplug.I couldn't play for a couple weeks. When I got back to playing I found out that time away is a good thing. It makes you much more creative when you do play again. Then there's the weed. That still never fails to motivate me.
  7. thanks alot. That tut was a big help. Nice Strat too.Love the blue burst
  8. I want to put an Emg 81 bridge in my guitar with the Emg pots and output. Then I wanted to put something passive in the neck.I won't want a volume or tone for the neck,so do I just wire it to an on/off switch then to the one side of the stereo output?
  9. I want to undercut the fret as you would for a bound neck, without binding the neck.I want to fill in the fret slot ends with rosewood dust and epoxy to cover the slots. First,is/was this done by others before? Will my fret ends stay tight to the board while having the tangs trimmed underneath?
  10. Nevermind. It was blushing. It took 3 days to go away.Water must have gotten into fretslots.
  11. I have this neck that the lacquer has cured.I started sanding it with 2000 and everything was going fine until I noticed that on some fret ends that the lacquer was white. It looks as if maybe I didn't file the frets flush enough and when I wetsanded,it made the lacquer let go of the edge of the board to create a tiny gap between the board and fret. Would that be an explanation?
  12. I love the old 80s early 90s peavy bandits(I have 2).Run the little monster through a cabinet.Use the old "shift mode".......yikes.Can you say "Metal" I like tubes for clean stuff. Not to mention, most tube amps have never been in my price range.A mesa Better sound good, it should heat my house and keep my woman happy too
  13. Good question.I might leave the wood or a mahogany veneer to match the body. I'd bet the flame with purpleheart will look great.
  14. I'm building a Mahogany Explorer with this maple, purpleheart neck.Still not done yet. I decided to try the headstock ears with the purpleheart and maple continuing the stripes.I don't know what to do.Should I get rid of the outside stripes and just go with maple or do they look alright the way they are? It's gonna be a 1 pickup explorer(EMG 81)with a Brazillian rosewood, walnut, red mahogany stain pattern. That neck is a 23 fret neck.Reason?I only had 1 board that was damaged,so I cut off the last fret.Hey,it's 1 more than the standard 22 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/neck2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/neck1.jpg
  15. That is a very nice piece of work! Now that's a christmas present
  16. I was looking at Myka's neck pocket jig and the only part I didn't understand is how to get your neck heel to exactly match the radius of the back of the neck pocket. Are there any tricks to doing this or is it done by hand to match?Or is the heel radius to be the radius of the ball bearing used to rout the pocket with? Please
  17. Also, try Footprint planes and Veritas.Although, you won't get a Veritas for under $100.The Footprint are affordable though. They're made in Sheffield England and I find are of very good quality.
  18. This is nuts.Another great guitarist is gone.I'm Stunned. R.I.P. Big D
  19. My D and G strings are in tune when playing chords with them. When I play them both open, the d is a little higher,or the g is lower.
  20. I've built a Solidbody strat out of walnut and I love it. It's LOUD and heavy. The sound is a midrange-snap.It has some twang. Did I mention it's LOUD. I can't say what it would sound like with high gain applications but clean tone and mid gain are nice. I'll use Walnut again for sure.
  21. Do EMG 81's come in standard and F space? Also,do they have poles or are they blades?
  22. I'm using body templates for the first time.I traced the body, then cut it out on the bandsaw leaving about 1/8 of an inch to the line.I was wondering if I am supposed to rout in a certain direction?(clockwise or counter)
  23. I have a question.Could the reason Metallica blows now a days be the producer?Remember the name Flemming Rasmussen? Was he more important to that classic sound then most realize?
  24. Thanks.Yeah,I built the neck except for the pre radiused board.I used rattle can armor coat lacquer.
  25. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/r2-13.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/r2-11.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...uildem/r2-3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...uildem/r2-2.jpg All my covers and knobs are still curing. Two piece Mahogany body. One piece maple neck. 24 fret 25 inch scale Graph tech nut. Gotoh tuners. Ebay Hardtail?? Wide high jumbo frets. Kent Armstrong m215k bridge. Kent Armstrong m214k neck.Temp, waiting for a 59' All parts pots and swich. minwax red mahogany stain. i couldn't wait for my 3m compounds to come in,so I stopped by my parents house and they gave me this howards fine and super fine compounds that work great. They also are safe for shellac, poly, lacquer and varnish. I still need to put a little oil on my fingerboard. I like it.That armstrong bridge is a pretty good economy distortion hum. Still a few rattles that need to be worked out,but it's gonna have a nice low action.(hopefully) Actually my second guitar but curing time and a sand through made it be my third.
