Great idea, I do like the threads that take you through every aspect of the design and construction of a guitar.

I made my first guitar body (I used a premade neck), just from reading stuff on this site.

its the one on the left, it came out great, I love it. I read Melvyn Hiscock's book after that, and I found it really helpful. Still I used pauliemc's technique for shaping the neck on my second guitar though

Hi, first time here. I'm having a little trouble getting started.

I've been playing guitar for about 3 years. Off and on, you know. I'll pick it up and strum around on it, nothing serious. I finally moved up to getting an Epiphone LP. I have very fast and limber fingers, I know how to strum and sweep and palm mute and all that type of stuff. I have equipment that will suffice. I have learned a good little bit of solos and riffs and such, about 20 different songs, including the STH solo, Iron Man solo, One intro solo, and can play them to speed and accuracy.

However, I've never actually taken the time to try to learn the real music to it. Things like scales and octaves and more chords. I've just gotten by with looking at tabs and when I make up my own stuff, just play random crap really.

I don't know what to start with first.

So, could anyone point me in the right direction, I'd like to actually learn guitar, not just play by tabs.

Looking great, love the clamps.

You can always pop the fb, take out the steel rod (it should have a steel reinforced neck) and install a proper adjustable truss rod. Thats what I did with the Kawai. The original truss rod was adjustable but about the diameter of a coat hanger. You can turn these old guitars into real players, they are made of good materials but have some design flaws. Your Kay could probably use some new frets anyway...its good practice!

i know there on the lower end of the spectrum but i didnt pay much and the one came with a real Vox case thats problaby worth more than the guitar. but there cool atleast to me.

Fantastic, an Iceman extravaganza coming up, I'd love to have a go on an Iceman ancestor at some time.

I think it is a horses for courses thing, I have a different outlook, I love oversize guitars, I am not a small guy and a lot of standard size guitars feel like toys to me. I had a look at the website and the bodies look great, good shapes, lovely colours, what was wrong with yours? was it just the size?

OK, this should be my last question for a while. Can you tell me the thickness of the body? If I use the center as a reference, I assume the tailpiece drops off about 1/4" and upper and lower bouts dip down 1/2". If that's the case, any of those measurements will do.

For what it's worth, that adds up to about a 43.3" degree radius.

I just glued up the lumber for the neck, so I'm not in a particular hurry for the info.

Just put the calipers on it, it's 41 mm close to the neck, hey if you have the timber glued up in the neck I want to see your thread in the In Progress section soon

Hey Muzz...do me a favor. Take 2 measurements on your Iceman for me. One from the TR cover side of the nut, to the end of the headstock, and one of the overall width of the headstock. Thanks!

Nice! The Iceman is one of my favorite shapes. Back in my band days, my main player was a PS10-2. My next serious "keeper" build will be a neck thru Iceman. I have had all the hardware stashed away for at least 5 years...Gibraltar II bridge, QC tailpiece, "M" tuners (all in gold). I guess I should get in gear.

Man, thanks for that. So, unless there's some lens distortion coming into play, it looks like there's a radius across the body (pickup switch to the bottom horn, for example) along with the 'drop off' behind the tailpiece. Is that right?

Cool, yep, that's it exactly, the thickness of the binding gives you a good indication, it's 12 mm at the upper bout close to the neck and 6 mm thick at all the extremities. Rock and Roll

Router on rails, flattens it down in no time

I've scanned the Internet for Iceman/PS10 images looking for an example of a carved top. The specs for Stanley's PS10LTD that it has one but it must be real subtle. Does anyone have a photo of one?

I'll post a side on shot later so you can see the carve profile, yes it is much more subtle than a Les Paul, but looks so much better than a flat top Iceman.

If you need to change a pickup cover you can learn from my mistake, do not try and desolder it off, the cover heats up and does strange things to the coating colour. This is the neck pick up on my new guitar.

Second time around I used a one edge razor blade and rocked it back and forward on the solder clips, this broke the join quickly and easily.

I used the pole screws from the Epiphone pickup and put them in the Ibanez pup.

And bought some Allparts covers.

Nice amp. I like those JVM models. but only if the speakers in the cab are up to it. Celestion speakers are not standard on a lot of the marshall cabs i have seen over here & they realy do make a big difference.

But you are right about the mode 4. realy nice piece of kit on the 2 left channels, especially when you crank it. as for the right side, holy crap. its like the gain goes to 11

That is exactly right, the quality of the speakers is just as important as that of the guitar and the amp. I have been told that the modern Marshall cabs have Chinese speakers in them, I don't know if that is correct. The speakers in my cab are Celestions, my amp head is the only bit of gear that I have ever bought new, I love the vintage stuff, my cab is from the 80s.

Isn't great to have that much gain on hand, what I like about the Mode 4 is the flexibility in sound, you can get classic Marshall tones but also more modern tones that suit downtuned guitars. Rock and Roll

Glad you like it, I always wanted a green quilted Js with gold hardware. Ibanez wont get off their asses & build it so an AEolian it is. when I get time to finish the back panel I might GOTM this one.

Not a bad delay pedal are they. I have one into the effects loop with a chorus, & another between the guitar & amp. makes for some realy dirty sounds when they are both on. Thats my rig in the workshop for customers to check out their guitars. overkill, but screw it

That is a good idea to have such a cool amp for your customers to try out their new guitars on.

I love the MF350 I had a go on one at a guitar show a while back, great articulation and sustain. Here's my amp, I connect the delay pedal into the effects loop and switch it in and out using the amps footswitch pedalboard.

Every now and again I think I could plug in a multi effects and control that and the amp by midi, but then I think, nah I just couldn't be $%^#ed
