Dr. Jabsco
Ive been wanting to use a tung oil finish on my bass, but I would like it to have a little bit of a shine to it. would grainfiller, tung oil, and 3 or 4 coats of poly achieve this? -Dylan
butnut
Not sure about tung, but I've used lacquer and poly over properly applied/cured Danish oil.
Dr. Jabsco
do you have any pictures of it?
ibreakemineedtobuildem
Ken Smith Basses do lacquer over tung oil. They have a website now.
butnut
Sorry Doc, no. I did that in my furniture refinishing biz years ago...on guitars and bikes I prefer to go nuts with kandies, flakes and pearls. I did a lot of Koa and it's amazing how the oil brings out every nuance of the grain and the way the flames reflect...gives more depth than just shooting a clear over the bare wood. skibum5545
Check out Waterlox finishes: waterlox.com they're tung oil based, and I really like the look they give. Loosetoe finished his bass with them a while back; I'll try to find a link. [edit] found it! http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.ph...l=waterlox&st=0 Edited August 23, 2004 by skibum5545
darren wilson
Polymerized Tung Oil will give you a bit more sheen, and Tru-Oil can actually get quite glossy with enough layers. Getting clearcoat to adhere to oiled would could be a bit of a challenge.
