javacody Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 I just bought a beautiful birdseye veneer and I had originally planned to dye my guitar's face red. Will the red obscure the eyes too much? Will a stain black and sand back work on a birdseye veneer (by the way, I've already searched and not found much on this). Quote
Doc Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Most of the funiture that I build is either Bird's eye or flame maple. If anything the dye will make the eyes pop even more. Use any kind of transparent stain. Stay away from m**wax type stains 'cause they will muddy things up. Lee Valley and Stew-Mac sell analines. You don''t need to counterstain, just go for the red. Another tip: Be careful about using too much glue. It will tend to pop out of the birdseyes if you use too much and you'll get little white dots there. Think of them as little 90 degree channels running straight at you.. Quote
javacody Posted February 24, 2005 Author Report Posted February 24, 2005 Doc, thanks for the help! I'm going to use a red aniline dye (lockwood). Since this is a real thin veneer, I'm going to use Alcohol instead of water. First, I have to fill in the mistakes in my original 1/4" maple top. Quote
