suregork
I'm sorry if this has been asked, but the search didn't give me any answers. I was thinking of building myself a 1*12, one 8 ohm speaker, or a 2*12 cab, with two 16 ohm speakers in parallel. I have two questions: 1. Is a cabinet simply a input jack --> speaker hot --> speaker neg --> neg to ground? Or are there any more electronics in between. 2. I have no idea how to calculate the volume of the box with the help of these values given for the speaker(s): click here (scroll down to the Thiele-Small Parameters) I don't know yet whether it will become a sealed or open cabinet. Which one would suit better for these speakers? Anyways I'll be thankful for any replies.
thedoctor
For what speakers? What is the desired final result? Driven by what?

thedoctor
Open-back, standard parallel wiring unless you think you might want to run more than one cab at some time. That gets a little messy. What kind amp is the driver?
lovekraft
Let me echo thedoctor's questions - what amp are you using, and what kind of sound are you looking for?
suregork
Stupid me. So, yes, I'm not totally sure on the exact amp yet as it will be bought this summer, but it will be an all-tube classic to hard rock head. That is the style of music as well. Been looking at Ashdown's heads and used Marshalls.
lovekraft
You can't go wrong with a 4-12 sealed cabinet, a la a Marshall 1960 or something similar. It's the classic rock sound, and you're just not going to get halfstack grunt out of a 1-12 or a 2-12!
suregork
OK. But do you think you could answer my original two questions .. I still think I'll be making a 2*12 closed back, because of physical and economic reasons. Thanks for your help though.
thedoctor
I stand by my answers to your original questions.
lovekraft
I agree - without any idea what amp you'll end up with, your best bet is probably an open-backed cabinet about the volume of a Fender Twin. I'd run two 16 ohm speakers in parallel, since 8 ohm cabs are pretty much industry standard.
Saber
1. Is a cabinet simply a input jack --> speaker hot --> speaker neg --> neg to ground? Or are there any more electronics in between. It's that simple. No electronics between the jack and the speakers. 2. I have no idea how to calculate the volume of the box with the help of these values given for the speaker(s): click here (scroll down to the Thiele-Small Parameters) Except for very few exceptions, guitar speaker cabinets ignore Thiele-Small Parameters. BTW, great choice of speaker. I put some Gov's in these cabs that I built recently: Pic1, Pic2, Pic3, Pic4, Pic5. suregork
thanks. What is the volume of your boxes?
Saber
thanks. What is the volume of your boxes? ← The volume is very loud! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Each cab is around 87000 cubic centimetres. But it wasn't based on any calculations. From the different 2x12 cabs that I checked, the Mesa horizontal recto comes closest to the dimensions of my cabs, for what it's worth. suregork
Thanks a lot. Good that the volume is loud also. .. I might use similar values then.. thanks.
