Poly Over Tru-oil

Recommended Posts

Since I finished my first guitar, I have begun to rethink the finish. Mostly because I've dinged the hell out of it and want something more durable. Common sense is telling me that I can't spray poly straight onto the Tru-Oil and that I'll probably need a buffer layer first -shellac most likely. Is this accurate?

As long as the oil is dry you should be able to go over it with poly. I'd cut the first coat to 50-50. There are a lot of furniture guys who use a mix of oil, beeswax, solvent (mineral spirits) and poly as a finish. All of this stuff is compatible.
