Sliding Switch Question

I just got a mustang type guitar with two sliding switches (on-off) above each pick up. Can you explain to me how these switches work in place of a toggle or a 5 way switch.

Each switch sets one pickup either in phase, out of phase or off.

what if they both are active at the same time?

Then you'll hear both pickups. I don't really understand your question - it's just another way to select either, or both, pickups.
