I'm planning to mod (or build a new body for, but it'll be easier just to mod it) my old short-scale Univox Hi-Flyer bass with a set of Fender Precision pickups I found on ebay (I also have a Jazz pickup, but I think I won't install that for now.

I'm trying to figure out where to place the pickups on the Hi-Flyer, given that it's a shorter scale.

From what I've gathered: on a 34" (864 mm) scale Fender Precision, the center line of the two pickups corresponds to about 30 inches (762 mm).

So if I take the ratio between my 30" (770 mm) scale Univox and the Fender, I get 0.89.

Then I just multiply 30" (762 mm) by 0.89 to get the pickup placement on the Univox

Which places the pickup at about 678 mm (26.7") from the nut.

Am I right? It's been 30 years since I've done any kind of math, so shoot me!

30/34= 0.882352941176470588235294117647059

0.882352941176470588235294117647059*30 = 26.4705882352941176470588235294118 (That's almost exactly 26-7/16" - within .1%)

26.4705882352941176470588235294118*25.4 = 672.352941176470588235294117647059 (in mm)

Or course, keep in mind that you should ideally have your strings centered between each pair of corresponding pickup magnets. Not that Fender seems to worry about it that much;-)
