Speaking Of Routing

Recommended Posts

Pursuant to my major score of free guitar parts, I'm planning to use the Squier Tele neck on the Strat body I received. I need to route the neck pocket to a square end for it to fit perfectly. How's the best way to do it?

I was thinking about tracing the outline on the neck pocket area and going very carefully freehand. There's not much to take off, but I realize how bad a sloppy job can look. It's a really nice body, so I'm looking for advice so I don't wreck it. Maybe a Dremel?

Make a template of 1/2" MDF or plywood, make sure it matches exactly how you need the neck to fit, then do it on the guitar body using that template and a standard hand router with a template bit, not a dremel.

Whatever you do, don't go freehand routing a neck pocket.

Got it. I have a brand spanking new tracing router bit, too!

For that small of a change draw the outline across the back and sides (keeping the neck pocket side angles) and use a chisel along the lines. Smooth with a scraper.

Yep, I used a chisel and got it done in about five minutes, smooth as butter. Now I just need some tuners and to wire it up.

Thanks guys.

You made sure the guitar will still intonate, right? How much of the neck did you take away?

And, uh, what are you going to do with the hollowbody? :D

I took nothing off of the neck, I just reshaped the end of the neck pocket to be flat instead of curved. I measured the scale length and determined that if I did what I did, it would intone more easily since the bridge pieces will center at the desired length more closely.

As for the hollow body? I have no plans for now. It's a plywood body, so I'm not too impressed. I someone were to offer me a set of tuner pegs for it though...

Just checking on the scale length thing...cool that it worked out so well.

The only hollowbody I'm really interested in right now is one of those old Coral longhorns...bidding on one right now (though this guy's stuff is all chipped up and cracked...people still bid way too much for them...)
