Bridge Pup Placement

Is there any protocol to placement of the bridge puppy? How close can you go and still get a reasonable response, considering the nearer, the harsher but the less amplitude of string oscillations to pick up.

Gibson LP or SG are about 1-5/8" from the scale point of the top E (at the saddle) to center of pickup (the height screw).

There is, as Gibson themselves found out --if the pickup is too close, the walls between the cavity and the TOM post might collapse.
