are there any veneer type things that are made black to replace the idea of painting?

or am i just confused..

and is there anything i can do to change the color of my fingerboard to black?

Not sure about the first. But for the second question. Yes, you can buy black fingerboard stain. PRS and Gibson use it to give striped ebony fingerboards a "more uniform black appearance". Here it is. There is also a tutorial on the main site about how to 'ebonize' wood.
