With 5mm at the centre you will have a fretboard thickness of 3.8 mm at the nut (the thinnest end). If you cut the slot exactly as deep as you need (1.88 mm is worst case if you use Stewmac freet wire, check your suplier) it will leave only 1.7 uncut. That is scary litle, but migt as well work.
