A Few Projects: Rg/ebmm Syle 7 String + Semi-hollow Tele

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been lurking the forums here for quite some time and though it was finally time to sign up and give something back.

I've only just started building guitars (well, these are my first) and already i can't stop thinking about what to build next!

First up is a 7 stringer which was basically designed around a RG body, EBMM headstock and a fixed bridge. Simple.

Needless to say, there's been PLENTY of um.... 'learning curves' so far :D. But I'm getting much more confident now.

The wood being used is fijian mahogany, yes i know now after reading here that it was a bad choice, i didn't bother changing it

for my first build. Rock maple neck and rosewood fretboard.

I've cut the body out (needs sanding) and cut the neck, put the trussrod in and the fretboard is ready to glue down. the headstock

looks terrible atm but it should come out ok after a good sand. I'm open to any advice thats for sure!

The other guitar I'm working on is a Semi-Hollow Tele.

I made the body out of blackbutt (could sound terrible, i have no idea?) since i got it free. Neck is maple with a maple fingerboard.

Unsure as to what top i'm going to put on it, i don't want to put too much $$$ into it though.

I've cut the neck routed the truss rod channel, drilled holes for the tuners and just waiting on the maple fretboard to arrive.

The body has had both sides routed out, but it's messy as hell so i have to go clean it up once day.

They're coming along but i wish i had spent more time planning. I pretty much sleep with Melvyn's book but it never really sunk

in about how important the planning and templates are. I did draw out full size plans but they were rushed and had a few things

that could of made things go horribly wrong!

are you putting a contour or bevel or something around the edges of the RG body? or is it a carve top? hard to tell, not sure what i'm seeing in the body. i've built 2 7 strings now, but both were neck through's, and i went for my own original designs on each one. they were also both tune-o-matic, pretty different i think from yours.

Was just going to have it like a standard RG, nothing fancy here. It's just a practice build but i might experiment with something after it's all fitting together. I picked up some nice QLD maple today which i'm going to use for a neck through guitar i designed (although not all that original lol) after these are done, assuming they turn out somewhat playable.

Drawn in cad and then added the colour in good old mspaint. I wouldn't finish it with the picasso, but i love the JPM's!

Did some work on the 7 string top today. Though i'd do a carve top and it's looking really nice so far. Might post a pic up once i'm done.

where about in syndey are you??

Thanks. I was going to put flame maple top on it, but not 100% sure yet.

ahh nice flame

ohh the shire..daaaam haha

The top is on it's way so hopefully i can get started on it next week.

Did some work on the 7 string. Shaped the neck and body. The neck heel needs a few mm off (obviously its too high) and needs more taken off near the first fret, but i didn't have time today to finish it off. The body needs a bit more help too. A few bits need to be evened out but on the whole i think it's started to look pretty decent.

However the guitar has recently changed to a 23 fret guitar. NEVER USE POWER TOOLS WHEN YOU'RE TIRED. I don't think i need to explain more here.
