SMellmo
Ok my memory is playing tricks on me ... A standard les paul top is 3/4" thick right ?
erikbojerik
Before carving, yes. If you measure the thickness at the bridge side of the bridge pickup rout, you'll see that they don't knock very much off in that general area. erikbojerik
Well....I guess there's some variability then in the thickness of the cap between different LPs then. My '83 Custom is exactly 3/4", just like the '93 Studio I have apart in the shop right now, and just like a friends '90 Custom that I reset the neck on about 5 years ago. mammoth guitars
My measurement is from a 1960 reissue classic, perhaps the other models are different.
Bainzy
The top was 5/8" thick on the first Les Pauls made before and including 1960 before final sanding, although some ended up closer to 1/2" thick after final sanding. After they started making them again in 1968, they've varied over the years but I don't think any were more than 3/4" thick, the Historics they make now are the same thickness as the old ones but I'm not sure about Standards.
