Rr Amber Tint Under Nitro

Hey everyone out there @ Project guitar! I've tried my best to find an answer to this questions but can't find anything on the web. Everyone seems pretty knowlegable here, so I hope I can get some help.

I've got a Fender Deluxe neck that I'm planning to bolt onto a project body I have. It started life as a MIM Poly unit with a satin finish. I sanded the neck down to a dull shine with 1000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a block, and really like the new gloss I've gotten from it after rubbing it out with a bit of rubbing compound. I dont, however, like that it's a very pale color maple (all maple neck), and doesn't have that slight amber tint my older 96 MIM strat has. I'd like to amber it a bit darker than my 96 (maybe a mid-sixties tint?), do I have to refinish the neck to do this?

I've ordered the RR amber neck tint and clear lacquer spray cans from RR and have experience with wet sanding and painting.

Here's the Question:

Can I sand down the poly finish on my neck and then add the tint, covering it with the lacquer? Am I going to have compatibility issues with tint sandwiched between poly and lacquer?

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think it would be a problem, but this is what I would do. Strip the poly off the neck except for the front of the headstock then spray the complete neck with the lacquor tinted with a bit of yellow or amber. I would use paint stripper instead of sanding it off as its would be easier on the fret board. Its much more work I guess so I can see the attraction of just spraying over the poly.The only problem I see in over spraying is that A. the finish might get a bit thick and B future wear on the fret board might look a bit weird as you first wear through the tinted lacquor first.

I did want to avoid removing the poly, because as Fender applies it, it's very durable and makes a great sealer. Lacquer works great but I don't want to to wear back into the wood after a few years. Will I need a strong stripper like used for the Polyester bodies. I imagine Polyurethane can't be as tough to remove as ester. Any favorite brand for this kind of work?

If you don't want to wear through better spray over I was just thinking that it might get a bit thick.

In a few words, Lacquer will not stick to poly or vice/versa. You will either need to remove the poly to use the lacquer or use poly with the tint. I know that's not what you wanted to hear but, Poly and lacquer are not compatible.

I guess I'll just have to strip the neck down and refinish it in lacquer. I've sprayed an Ibanez neck over with lacquer (but without the tint) and it seems to hold fine; having the tint there, I don't know if it'd add any problems. I just figured it'd work since Fender uses lacquer on top of some of their poly bodies.

I've read about aircfraft remover, but I don't know if it'll eat throught the dot inlays I have on the neck. Any other strippers work well that won't

eat up the plastic parts on my neck?
