jackasspenguin Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Hi, This in my first post. I'm new to the site. So, hi everyone. I'm looking for some nut files for my brass strat blanks. I tried to use some jewelers files but they just dont' do the job. Does anyone know where I gan get some good files. Thanks a bunch Johnny Quote
Flon Klar Guitars Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Stew-Mac and ebay, the usual suspects. Quote
WezV Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 yeah, normal nut files do the job just fine but take a little bit longer - unless you are cutting hundreds of brass nuts you dont need anything else Quote
low end fuzz Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 "IF" you were cutting thousands of brass nuts; what would you use? Quote

Doug 59 Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 "IF" you were cutting thousands of brass nuts; what would you use? As a Silversmith / Jeweller ..... I'd cast them .... Re the original question. Good quality Jewellers Files will just eat up brass, after all they're made for filing Silver and Gold. Silver and low carat Gold are a lot harder than brass. Brass is a soft greasy metal by comparison. I use a number of different saws and files, as well as a grinding stone, to shape my nut blanks, then I use standard Nut Files for the the string slots. As Wes V says, just takes a little longer. Here's an example of a couple of nuts and the Flat Brass bar they've been cut from. Quote
Ifixguitars Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 I just use my standard nut slotting files. They're by Grobet and are available from Martin. I'd imagine that any brand nut files would do just fine. Quote
