GuitarMaestro Posted December 9, 2003 Report Share Posted December 9, 2003 Hi! I am currently building my first guitar with a floyd. I am not sure how deep to place the locking nut on the neck. Is there a standard, how high the nut has to be above the fingerboard or should I install it how I consider it right and in order to minimize the action? Thanks in advance, Marcel Knapp! guitarchump Posted December 9, 2003 Report Share Posted December 9, 2003 Well on my RG 350 it is recessed into the fret board 5/32 of an inch and the height from the fret board to the nut slot is 2/32 of an inch But remember it depends on the frets you use because of there varying heights the ones one my RG are jumbo frets as most RG's have. daveq Posted December 9, 2003 Report Share Posted December 9, 2003 It depends on the fret height and desired action. I usually use jumbo fret wire and use 2/32 of fretboard material beneath the nut. It's usually close for me. If you take off too much wood, you can shim the nut (see AllParts.com). Just be careful to keep it perfectly level when removing the fretboard wood for the nut.
