moojiefulagin
Hi! I know there are millions of posts on string height, but I couldn't find one that answered my question. Just humor me. Is there a general rule for string height at the nut, and is there a way to install the nut at the correct height without stringing up? (i.e. distance from fretboard to bottom of low and high E slots, etc.) Thanks a lot
GuitarMaestro
This might help you....
moojiefulagin
Thanks, but the nut is already slotted. My question was in regard to the height of the entire nut in relation to the fretboard. I want to know how much to file down the nut
Lex Luthier
I slot nuts on the instrument with the strings installed. You could probably do it with a VERY skinny ruler. You'd dry fit the nut, and with the ruler, if it's skinny enough, fit it into the slots and place the other end of the ruler on the second fret, then look for a slight gap between the ruler and the first fret. moojiefulagin
Thanks! Do you by any chance have an estimate of the gap size? Anyone else have tricks?
GuitarMaestro
Why don't you simply copy the nut of a guitar you like?
Scott Rosenberger
I use a Dunlop Orange Tortex pick to gap string height at the first fret. Not exactly scientific method but it works for me
