StiffyGRX40 Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I am going to build my first guitar for a summer project. I want it to be neck-thru but i don't know what kind of wood to have for the body, neck and fingerboard. I want it to be as cheap as it can be since it's my first attempt. Any suggestions? Quote
asm Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 depends, what kind of tone do you want, and what kind of tools do you have to work with? alot of people make stuff out of mahogony, its mid-lo priced and has a great tone, good to work with too. if you wanted to go lower than that, pine, oak, cheap maple, stuff at home depot maybe. but thats absolute bottom end budget. spirit Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Like asm said, it depends on what sound(s) you're looking for Quote
StiffyGRX40 Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 does it matter what the fingerboard is or is rosewood and ebony the only wood i can use? Quote

StiffyGRX40 Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 what are some good cheap woods to use for fingerboards? Quote
Maher Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 rose wood is proberly one of the cheapest best woods for fingerboards Quote
skibum5545 Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Rosewood is good, maple is good, all you need is a durable, hard wood. Some people on this site have used teak or beech, so don't let the standard woods limit you! Experiment! For the body, mahogany usually sound good with a maple neck. For both looks and affordability, that combo is usually a good bet. Quote
