Well, after a month of so's delay, I present to you my lightweight 4 string 34" bass, "Great Scott!" The reason for the name can be found both in the build thread: http://www.projectguitar.com/forums/topic/49494-another-swift-lite-bass/ and this post here: http://www.projectguitar.com/forums/topic/49580-international-rescue-the-power-of-projectguitarcom/ Basic spec is: 34" scale 4 string bass Poplar burr top, swamp ash back, maple /walnut neck, maple fretboard, ebony blocks Luminlay side markers Aero P / J pickups Master vol, master tone, blend Magnetic fixings for control chamber and trussrod cover Knobs made from body woods Finish - mixed stains, tru-oil slurry and buffed (body), Danish oil (neck) Final playing weight sub 6 3/4 lbs I'm a hobby builder and embarked on my first foray into woodworking around 6 years ago. I build for my own use, fellow band members, friends, family and occasional commissions such as this one. I've built bass guitars, electrics and acoustics over that time. Not the smoothest of builds, but got there in the end! In recent years I've been trying to challenge the often surprised statement when an non-player picks up a guitar or bass for the first time, "Gosh - why are they SO heavy???" So this one (and nor are the other electrics and basses I've built recently) isn't So here is "Great Scott!" (and he really is, by the way)

ADFinlayson, "The Eye Of Sauron" "Here's my entry then, my 5th build that I completed recently for friend of a friend Luke. I've dubbed it The Eye of Sauron due to the beetle tract that appeared on the back after thicknessing. He's a big LOTR fan so seemed appropriate. Got some good use out of wood on this on; the khaya neck laminates came from offcuts of the mk2 and the top, the neck, inlays, binding and control cover all came out of one plank of maple, the rest of which I'm using on the flying V build, which is also going to be blue, sisters Since he picked it up a few weeks ago, he hasn't wanted to play anything else which astonished me as he is the store manager of an instrument chain (PMT UK) and owns 14 other guitars. Apologies for the amateur photography. Spec - 1 piece carved African mahogany body - 2-piece flame maple cap with faux binding - carved flamed maple control cover - laminated flamed maple and African mahogany neck - Ebony headstock with flamed maple inlay - Ebony fretboard with flamed maple trapeze inlays and grain-matched truss rod cover - Ebony and flamed maple binding - 24 medium jumbo nickel-silver frets - 43mm Graphtech tusq nut - oiled blue burst finish - Mini Grover Rotomatic 3x3 tuners - Graphtech Resomax bridge with TUSQ saddles and Gotoh tailpiece - Dimarzio Liquifire bass, SuperDistortion treble pickups - Switchcraft 3-way toggle switch - CTS push-pull volume with treble bleed - CTS push-pull tone, both pickups can be coil-tapped individually - Ebony lampshade control knobs. And I went to watch it play it's first show last night, which was a big thing for me Cheers Ash

ZekeB, "Mako I" "Here we go. Big thanks to the ProjectGuitar.com family for helping me through it. This is the Mako I Wood - Honduras mahogany body, figured maple top, macassar ebony fretboard Scale Length - 25.5" Compound Radius - 12"-15.6" Pickups - Tom Anderson pickups H2, SF, SFR (neck) 10 position Freeway Blade switch Master Volume & Tone Pots Push/Pull volume pot to act as a kill switch (standby switch) Schaller Non-Tremelo Bridge This is my 1st build. I've done other wood work but nothing to this scale. Spent about a year reading, researching, and designing before going after it. I built it in my garage starting with a few tools. As it progressed I accumulated more and tried different things before moving forward. Some worked, some really didn't, haha. I had an idea of what it was going to be and I didn't think I would break from that plan but I was pleasantly surprised it changed it so much. As I built it kind of took on its own character and I just went with it. It definitely took longer to change things but on the artistic side its a lot more pleasing to let the design take its own course. The other element was how it played. I'm much more a musician than a luthier and I'm really happy how well that turned out. Sounds nice and smooth with plenty of ringing sustain, some great flexibility, and low consistent action. The original idea was to take all the elements I love from other guitars and make something unique with all those variables. I feel I was pretty successful in that regard. I really enjoyed the whole process and this definitely won't be my last build. Thanks! ---- Komodo - "'66 Korina Super Sport" Of course the date is fictional, except it was the year -I- was manufactured and the touchstone for this guitars aesthetic. My goal was a vintage looking and very modern playing muscle car of a guitar. As a player it is easily my favorite, with the wood combo it has sustain for days, and action is fast. Bridge tones are thick and edgy, cleans sound super chimey on either pickup but the center position is amazing. 25” scale Korina / white limba body Pau Ferro neck with Macassar ebony fretboard and MOP dots Gotoh tremolo and tuners Seymour Duncan SH-11 bridge pickup, A2 14k, added nickel cover Seymour Duncan Black Winter neck pickup, ceramic 16k parallel, added custom nickel cover Volume and tone, both pickups have split switch, the bridge also pulls some low-end from the second coil and retains most humbucking. Switches are Honeywell 6AT2 SPDT used in military aircraft. $90 minis! (these were $5 used on ebay). Toggle has custom smoke / fire plate. CTS pots are sporting oxblood “Klon” knobs on them. The finish is nitro, the body was put in a deep freezer for a few days then pulled into a warm room to produce crazing and checking. The hardware was all new and shiny, it was dinged and rubbed with steel wool and sandpaper, and fumed with muriatic acid to produce a heavy relic finish. Neither the clear nitro or hardware was intended to look like a naturally aged instrument but more of a fictitious barn find. I do not have to worry about scratching this one as it only gets better! ---- Gallery Mako I '66 Korina Super Sport

    December 2018

Name: Delta Cloud - becaus it's a slide guitar and it has cloud inlays. build thread here: http://www.projectguitar.com/forums/topic/49382-delta-cloud-getting-close-anyway "The woods and materials used, especially if there is something unusual in there!" Nothing unusual. One piece "A.... frican mahogany" body, and flame maple neck were sourced locally. Fretboard, headstock overlay, pickguard, and tailpiece (all gaboon) were from allenguitar.com 1/8" flamed maple top from evilbay. MOP "pendant" headstock inlay Pearloid fretboard markers and binding Dual action truss rod TUSQ nut "Scale length(s) and other specific configuration details" 25" scale length, no radius, 23 frets. 1.75" wide at the nut, approx .80 thick at the 1st and .90 at the 12. Low medium fret-wire, counter-sunk bridge. Set neck construction, body is fully hollow with a block under the bridge. Just over 5lbs fully assembled. "Electronics, pickups, etc." 4 x 90mm lipsticks - 4.1 Ohms. A 3 way toggle, a 6-pole-4-throw rotary, two volumes (Bourns) and a grease bucket tone control with bypass via push/pull. LP/master-tone wireup with a twist - 6 different modes for the 3 way; 1) outside coils single, 2) inside coils single, 3) outside vs inside parallel, 4) bridge vs neck parallel, 5) outside vs inside series and 6) bridge vs neck series "Is this your first build, fifth or five-hundredth?" This is my first 6 string, and 2nd scratch build ever. (editor: second build, second GOTM win also!) "A bit of information on your own background as a builder helps give context to your build." I worked at a cabinet shop in high school and solid surface/laminate cabs 20 years ago. I have assembled/finished quite a few guitars before. I do a lot of diy electronics. "Was it built in the garage, at school, work or in your own shop?" I have a humble garage... thank you to my wife for parking in the driveway and my neighbors for not complaining! "A summary of the build's history. Was it built for yourself, friend/family or a client? Did you design the instrument and its specifications or was it built to spec?" I owned a 90's u2 reissue and always regretted selling it. I built this for me, to scratch my 'slide itch'. AFA design, I built a simple photoshop doc where I used fret2find (projectguitar!) and my humble photoshop skills to make my own plan. "What were the inspirations behind the instrument and why were various build aspects chosen? Any background on what makes it special?" My requirements were: 'something that would feel a lot like my old dano', but better materials, and to leave my mark on it. I also had a goal to challenge my self with more complicated inlays, set neck, angled headstock, and binding. Additionally, just wanted to say that I'm very greatful to be a part of this community! Your input directly contributed to details like how to join my 'super-thin' top, getting my finish right(somewhat), and more. Thank you so much to Andyjr1515, ScottR, Curtisa, Skyjerk, Mr Natural, Norris, Komodo, Lwguitar, Guitar Goomba, ShatnersBassoon, 2.5itim for guidance, encouragement, comiseration and/or just responding to my build posts!
