  1. Homemade version. YES! Looking at the basic way the set I picked up is made. A car jack came to mind(effecitvely all the parts would be there* short of a couple bars). I just slapped these together. I have some ideas on how I could mount them to a bench. I will still use wax paper to avoid sticking. I will also probably add cork to the top and back bars(protect softer woods). I will also place a long block at the sides for better pressure spread. Even as is though these would do solid bodies just fine, and can be adjusted down for necks or what have you. As far as steel over wood for the cross bars. I have steel that could be bolted up, but there just is no reason to use it unless I wanted to use 4-10'bars to span the clamps. I would probably still use cork on the bars to protect the wood. Peace,Rich Car jacks was the first thing that i thought of too! Great minds eh
  2. I love the simplicity of those metal clamps - but the price! I'm sure a nice homemade version in possile.... *ponders*
  3. When doing dots it's always wise to drill right through the board with a very small bit first, it not only helps with accuracy (giving the larger bit something to line up on) but allows you to add a little super glue from the back of the board to hold the dot in place - nice and neat
  4. When reading about stuff like this I'm a little dubious as to such ideas. Modifications such of this will change the sound of the instrument, I'm sure, and it will make the top vibrate more "perfectly", but it's the jangly imperfections in the guitar's sound that makes it what it is!
  5. My new baby Hired a transit and went to Wales today to pick it up - seems to be a top notch bit of kit!
  6. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Anything you need - give me a shout!
  7. That's ace mate! Cheers! I'm using Dimarzio's so if you could wack it in those colours I'd be forever in your debt. Thanks again!
  8. I've got a friends guitar the moment and he wants the pickups replacing and it re-wiring with a complicated switching system. Its had me stumped for a while, and I was wondering if one of you electronics geniuses could take a look at it for me It's an HSH guitar, and he wants the following combinations: Neck Series Neck Parallel Neck split and middle 2 Inner Hum coils Bridge Series I can work it all out bar the neck parallel section - I dont think I've got enough poles on the switch to include that one! (it's a megaswitch - 4 pole) Any help guys?
  9. Do the acoustic course man! They're ace instruments to make, and once you can do an acoustic an electric's pretty easy
  10. Has everyone forgotten the merits of a good old hand plane? That's what I use to joint my acoustic tops, and my violin wedge.
  11. I finished it just because I was spraying the whole guitar, neck finish makes little difference to me it seems. I can tell you that before finishing, even sanded up with just 240 paper the rosewood felt WONDERFUL and glassy smooth.
  12. It's on the list, don't worry! I'll be plubing in a proper system once everything's in place. Might order the thickness sander tomorrow!
  13. Got one! £152 from machine mart - seems to be a sturdy, well made bit of kit.
  14. http://www.solar.myby.co.uk/darkmatter/dmg002.html My second acoustic - complete with rosewood neck
  15. The Jet one is the one I've had a little bad exprience with - the one I've got access to in college (while the wadkin's out of action) hasn't heald up too well. The spindle is a little bent meaning some vibration, and the motor's a little weak (Baring in mind I'm sanding acoustic moulds - 10cm thick MDF)
  16. My first thoughts when I saw it too. That could work well. Could even be worth placing a thin contrasting veneer on first - make a feature of the contour lines.
  17. I've just bought the first of a full set of new tools for my workshop - a Record BS350 (A startrite sister company) bandsaw. 1 1/2 HP motor, top quality blade guides, biig cast iron table etc etc... It's great! Now for the questions - I need myself an oscillating spindle sander, and I'm a little stumped as to what to go for. Axminster's offerings are apparently poor quality. Delta do one but no where can I find the maximum sanding height they can cope with - does anyone have expirience with these units?
  18. The lack of heel is ACE! I'm considering attempting something similar on my next guitar - do you have any pictures of the un-assembled joint?
  19. Don't know if I'm too late, but here goes nothing... DMG002 000-sized baritone acoustic guitar 29" scale length 10mm thicker body than standard 000 tuned B-B or A-A Select Sitka Spruce top Highly flamed Oregon Myrtle (Pepperwood) back and sides Straight-grained 80-year-old Indian Rosewood neck A-Grade Ebony fingerboard Buffalo ivory nut and saddle And here's a little soundclip... http://www.solar.myby.co.uk/darkmatter/baritonedemo.mp3
  20. Excellent stuff man, looks real real cool. Keep us posted - I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out
  21. He's just bought a new startrite...luverly tool but out of my budget. I can't use his - he lives too far away, and besides - what would my workshop be without a bandsaw?
  22. It's an elixir resonator set - 16 through 58. It feels like a normal guitar with light-mediums on at the moment to me, I may go a little heavier next time round and see what happens, especially in the bass.
  23. Thanks Now - a little soundclip. It's recorded when tuned to the B equivilant of DADGAD, with a bad recording setup, but you get the idea a little... http://www.j4mie.org/misc/baritonedemo.mp3
  24. Cheers guys. It sounds great yeah, I'm really happy with it - it needs playing in a bit but I'm sure it's going to mature nicely. As for the tuning - it's B to B at the moment, but I'm going to have a little experiment and see what sounds best over the next week or so...
