    pickups

Hi guys, Its time for me to get some pups for the bass. I was thinking of stretching out and buying a pair of EMG-HZ pickups @ $75 each , i thought about it for a while , and im not quite prepared to spend $150 on pickups for what is only my first project guitar. So im looking for something cheaper but still very good. how about "Select by emg" i have a pair of select humbuckers on my 1987 hohner headless bass, and i am quite happy with them, the can give a beautiful tone especially when used with a pre-amp. i would like the growl and punchiness of J-bass pickups, i think it would suit my new bass perfectly. so how about these: stewmac #1146 any other ideas? i have tried looking for other websites that sell bass pickups , but no joy yet. thanks, john.
  3. yes, go to www.guitarbuild.com , in the download section there are cad plans for a tele enjoy, john.
  4. thanks , hav`nt thought of a name to be honest, any suggetions ? im stumped on that one Rose perhaps? cos of the huge amount of rosewood used in its construction.... yeah sounds good to me.
  5. well i have it all assembled , it has a really nice acoustic sound so should sound great when i put some decent p-ups into it! the latest pics are here: http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~daveyj/guitar%20assembled/ john.
  6. im just finishing up my first project, a 4-string bass and boy is it good! it plays really nice , just a little setting up needed. ..... and i built it from scratch so i reckon i fit into the player category. im a very happy person!
  7. i just bent mine by hand, did the job nicely! of course the last 1 or 2 inches of it cant be bent by hand, but i cut them off cause i had 6 feet of the stuff. I HATE FRETTING ........ ARGGHHH! :o
  8. wicked! could you send them to me too? thanks in advance!, john.
  9. you could use maple for the body i presume you want a light coloured wood that can be sunburst like kurts, maple would do the trick.
  10. hi BeAR, are those the ones you sent me previously? cos the backgrounds are yellow ish. just wondering how you cleared them for printing? thanks, john.
  11. i`d love a copy of those plans matia! , send em on! john.davey2@mail.dcu.ie
  12. your right there , its very important to leave it for a day or so before you can be sure of the results . I spent about 3 days fine tuning the neck bow on my strat. , better to play it safe!
  13. while looking down the neck (towards the body) tighten the rod clockwise(only a small amount) what i do is hold the guitar vertical between my legs , pull the neck straight with my left hand and tighten the rod with my right hand. If the rod seems very tight , LEAVE IT ALONE! you may strip the threads, get it setup by a pro i would like someone to back me up on this just incase im wrong and you mess up your guitar. hope this helps.
  14. i agree , the blue one is very nice! kinda custom-shop ish! excellent logos dude!
  15. ah thats only a minor detail! , no im gonna build it up first b4 i decide on pickups and electronics. im thinking of two j-bass style single coils. what you reckon? john.
  16. well heres my progress so far! neck nearly finished , waiting for fret saw to arrive in post... body nearly finished, the edges are carved kinda like a prs , i just need to rout a little hole for truss rod adjustment. see pictures at : http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~daveyj it looks better in the flesh! this is my first project , and so far i am damn happy with it! enjoy, john.
  17. nice to see the rory gallagher strat! , savage looking machine.
  18. i was thinking more along the lines of using a stereo jack , but wiring the magnetic pickup output to one channel and grounding the piezo J-fet buffer to the other , this would mean that the battery would not drain when the guitar is plugged out , but alas would not allow stereo seperation .... i dont mind. im thinking of including such a system in the bass im building. p.s , does anyone have any good schematics of pre-amp systems with Eq controls ? thanks, john.
  19. please leave that guitar natural colour, just lacquered. It would look sweet as a nut! very nice job!
  20. should`nt the nut slot be cut at an angle? , such that the string rides on an apex which is as close to the body side of the nut as possible, perhaps if you cut it at a sharper angle it may cure this. ps , im in no way an expert on this so donr take my word for it! john
  21. in all honesty , theres no reason why the licensed ones cant be as good as the originals provided they are made using the same dimensions? how different can they be?
  22. Doh! sorry , last nights alcohol has`nt left my brain yet ........ aint thinkin straight! nice looking axe chris!
