  1. well , most of the hardware arrived yesterday! i have already routed the truss rod hole, and shaped the neck. I realised that i have a serious amount of what seems to be rosewood .. so i made my fretboard .... that gets fitted tomorrow. seriously this wood is nice, it has a very stormy looking grain, and is very heavily flamed (flames are 90 degrees to the grain) , and its a very nice colour. much darker than the mahogany and yet brighter than the rosewood fretboard on my strat. i`ll try to get a few pictures up tomorrow! John. <-------- happy!
  2. FIXED!! yey! it was just a dodgy string .... cant understand why? but anyhow ..... back to some in-tune solos! thanks for your help.
  3. the only problem i see with fitting a preamp , is that you wont have room for it in a strat. perhaps if you routed a cavity for it, and what about eq controls? i would be nice to keep it looking standard.
  4. Bear , Jehle , seeing as i am very bad at using graphics programs, would there be any chance you could email me a copy of your "Fender" logo? i wont plagiarise it that bad! i would love to make a righhanded playing left handed shaped 70`s big headstock strat in jimmy hendrix white and call it an afrocaster as someone mentioned earlier! ... please please please .. pretty please! or at least show me where to download something similar. thanks, john
  5. thats an idea and a half! i might paint my bass in some kinda chromaflair or flip paint ... very different! wOOt
  6. yeah , suppose your right. i`ll call around to a friend of mine and "borrow" an e string or 2!. i have a bit of distance to travel if i want to get a new string!(into dublin city centre), ah well thanks for all the help guys hopefully a new string sorts it out! john.
  7. sorry , just noticed you post there jeremy, no its the high E string thats causing trouble, not the one that was dented, but thanks for your input the saddles seem fine to me, they aint moving at all, and they are right were they should be. The leg bones connected to the, hip bone , the hip bones connected to the something. the somethings connected to the wristwatch...... oh oh!
  8. i seriously doubt its the string at fault to be honest, because of the ones i was bending hard, it was one of the least used ones, and i have regularly kept the same set on a guitar for more than six months at a time. Thes ones are barely two months. plus i havn`t had the time to go out and get new strings. what way should the nut be cut on the high E ? am i right in saying that it should be done at an angle in such a way that the string just touches the highest point(nearest the bridge) ? i dont know what to do. i`ll change the string and see what happens, but until then im very puzzled! thanks for the help anyhow! (p.s the description should read, intonation problem (big!) not (nig) ... oops!)
  9. That looks great jehle! , so tell me how do you guys do it??? do you make the logo from scratch or do you "borrow" one from the fender site and modify it? i made one myself that is a rudey word! tee hee hee! but its solid black, and the resolution aint great. what program should i use? thanks , and keep up the great work! rock
  10. just to add to the above, i would also like to know if automotive paint can be used, as my dad does it for a living so i have all of the gear and a bit of experience spraying.
  11. no i thought about that ,but the gap about looks right , the neck joint is very tight so i cant really imagine any movement. bear in mind , this problem is only with the high E-string , the B and the G are perfect so it could`nt really be down to movement
  12. I know this forum is for homebuilt guitars and such, but i reckon this is the best place to ask this question so here goes: I am having big intonation problems on the high E string of my chinese squier standard series stratocaster. The fretted 12th is almost a whole semi-tone below the 12th fret harmonic ..... which is bad. the story so far: about 2 months ago , i gave the guitar a good once over, set the intonation... beautiful.. perfect! about a month ago , on went a new set of ernie ball super slinkys , no apparent problems there, about a week ago ,i picked up the guitar and noticed some damage(not done by me!!) , there is an imprint of the low E string in the fretboard, and the string has two small dents in it. i checked the neck , and it appears to be still straight , so that was that. recently i spent a few hours playing loads of 70`s rock tunes ,involving mucho string bending, and began to notice a lot of difficulty trying to get a 2 semitone bend on the high E string. so i checked the intonation ,and as i said already , its WAY OUT! i have tried to correct it by moving the saddle towards the neck(all the way) , its got better but still ridiculously bad. any ideas ? would i be right in saying that the nut may be the problem? or a bent neck? i checked the neck relief against my friends mexican fender strat , and realise i have a slight bit too much but that could`nt be the problem , could it? i really appreciate any help on this matter, blush thanks, john.
  13. sounds good , i was thinking more along the lines of , as you said before , replace one of the tone controls with a volume for the piezo system, that way you can have even more blends of sound , and of the 5 pickup combinations with or without the piezo and any combination of volumes. what do you think? would that work also? i dont know what way the tone controls are on a standard strat, but mine is a fat strat , so the first tone knob controls the neck pickup, the second one controls the middle pickup ,and the bridge(humbucker) has no tone control. so can i simply use the one tone control for both pickups? or would the pots have different values? thanks, john. (p.s , the transducers are wired paralell yeah? , just checkin)
  14. yes please! john.davey2@mail.dcu.ie thanks.
  15. i might just give that a go sometime! ,sounds fairly simple . when its done can you make an mp3 of it sowe can hear what it sounds like? great stuff!

can anyone tell me what the contour knob on my marshall does exactly? it seems to be a mid-cut filter , ie it behaves the opposite way to a mid control. (its between the treble and bass controls) any ideas?
  17. no its actually a 99`chinese squier.(fat strat, so i got a humbucker ) but yeah ive heard the jap ones are quite good.

  23. hi guys, just a few little q`s , firstly what thickness should my headstock be?bearing in mind i have not decided on what tuners to get. i was thinking of getting a stew mac double action truss rod(cos thats the only place i seem to be able to find them 4 sale) Has anyone ever made their own truss rod? Any tips? would threaded bar be ok to use? what are typical neck heel dimensions? im planning on using 60(width) x 22 x 80 mm , would this be ok? are zero fret setups easier or harder to do than a simple nut ? im sure many more questions will come to mind later! thanks.
