  1. well, i picked one up from a dude on craigslist, $450, in showroom floor condition (except pick marks of course)!!! Goodbye, Gibson SG. You are hereby bannished to your case as the backup guitar for eternity.

NICE! i have been dying for one of these for a long time! 450 is way cheap. i prefer the black cherry finish tho. but that classic black one looks almost exactly like a gibson... almost... actually i like them better than gibsons.

  2. heres my next project. a carved top rg-sh style guitar.

    specs

solid african mahogany with carved top

curly maple neck with ken lawrence headstock

    24 fret 24.75 scale

    set neck

    duel hums

    rear routed electronics

what should i do for a finish? i like natural, but this mahogany is a bit boring, any ideas

  3. Hey everyone, after researching quite a bit I have become fairly enamoured with the ESP EC-1000, however I have not seen one in person. The only two ESP dealers around me dont stock that model, so I have no chance of ever trying it out before I buy it, which is a major no no for me. I could take the plunge and go with mail order and if its not up to snuff just send it back, but thats a huge pain Done it before, dont want to again. The only pictures I can find of the thing are from the front, and I would love to see the neck joint details as well as here any sort of review of the feel of the neck. Thanks guys.

  4. Another quick question: Why are these so cheap? I read somewhere on this site that people have bought these before and they are good quality. But i was wondering why these were so inexpensive. here

just because they are so thin, and the seller lives in canada and processes his own wood.

  5. Word! cool, cool. Thats what I was hoping to hear and is why I wasn't gonna say anything because I hadn't even seen tuner or nuts in any of the pics. Keep us posted on progress. What type of nut will you be using? And what type of tuners?J

i will be using the black keystone tuners. they are in a post on the last page somewhere. i will be using a white bone nut. everything is all done except for the nut. whew. gtom entry? probably not

  6. :D Noob question. Since I want to stain then burst the edges, I should be sanding to the white ( I guess this is the color after the sealer is gone)?

Do I need to reseal it or will just staining be OK?

I still got some sanding to do before I start anything but I would like to know so I can start getting everything this weekend.

    Thanks in advance.

well if you seal it again, then the stain wont stain.

  7. Man, thats so cool. How do you get the routs so clean!? How do you get everything so clean!!!????? I mean, I haven't had a lot of practice, and my first guitar was a neckthrough with oak (aka steel) sides, but, my stuff comes out rough. How do you cut the cavity covers so exact? What do you use to cut the neck so it follows the right taper, and matches the fretboard? how everything!?

    2 things.

    template router bit.

  8. Very nice. Yeah, I know it bugs me what I can't get a good shot. My zebrawood is the same way, at some angles is reflects strangely other angles the lines just mush together ruining the definition of the wood. The camera I have been using is a super old digital, works fine, just poor quality and only the only zoom is a buttom that says X2, LOL. I have a better one somewhere, I just end up keeping that old one around because of the dust and chemicals and stuff.

I can't to wait to see what your fretboard looks like sanded fully, coco and really shine nice. Thats a nice piece, I am a big fan of the figure of flatsawn coco, but both look great. The neck shape looks great and you did it quick, good job and very nice. Keep them progress pics coming. Also, a question you might have missed, did you do anything to keep the fretboard in place? Like set pins or anything. J

sorry, forgot to answer that earlier. nope diddnt use any setpins. the fretboard was 4 inches wide uncut, so it was huge. i just applied glue, and rubbed together for a while, and it stuck perfect. thanks for the kind words.

  9. the white part is the sanding sealer. i have re-done 11 jacksons, and they all have had sanding sealer on them. the js 20 is the cheapest lowest model jackson makes, but is still a decent guitar. indian cedro is a great wood. i love the way it sounds. and yes, try to keep as much of the paint as possible on the guitar. what color are you planning on painting it? because that influences what color of primer you should use.

  10. Hi guys, I've got a question on what to use as a filler for mahogany when a trans black will be aplied over it. The two products (both minwax) in question are:

    http://www.minwax.com/products/woodprep/stainable-fill.cfm

    and

    http://www.minwax.com/products/woodmaint/putty.cfm

Am I right in thinking the Stainable Filler is more suitable for the job?

    Thanks a bunch in advance,

    Maurits

well, out of those 2 options, neither of those are actually grain fillers. those are just wood putty to repair holes or gouges. i wouldnt used that for grain filler. and it also depends wether you are staining to a trans black, or using tinted paint to achieve a trans black

  11. My guess...

    Inferior/faulty glue joints.

i agree what glue did u use?

I used high grade wood glue, not very different to titebond ( it even smells the same) I used plenty of glue, and i have always used that brand of glue and this is the first time this happens :D will it stop moving?? or with it get totally effed up??

actually it looks like the paint is shrinking around the glue joints. that happened to a couple of my builds. for a while you couldnt see it but a few days later you could see the glue lines.

  12. well i hate fender more than anything, and jackson is my favorite brand. they have only put out 2 new jackson models since the buyout. the js30 series and the new RR24. the js series is the cheapest of the jacksons, but by far the best cheap guitar you can get. i have not played the new rhoads RR24 though. and the custom shop is still the same, so that doesnt change much.
