  1. it looks bad because the guitar looks bad - i think if that was done on a well built guitar it could look half-way towards decent.

i wouldnt call it a swirl because, well quite frankly as a swirl its a rubbish one!

If you squint hard there is almost an oil puddle effect going on

definately more practice needed but the idea is an interesting one

well i dont think you guys are getting it. i diddnt try to make a cool looking paint job. i was just refinishing it and it had been left outside so the wood is a bit uneven, so when i sanded, it sanded unevenly. i diddnt do this purposely, i just thought it looked cool in the process. its already primered up now. but once again, i wasnt trying to do a swirl, i was just using swirl as a reference

  2. Frankly, looks pretty bad from over here. Hard to say how much of it is due to the poor photo, though. It's rather 'blobby' compared to how most people imagine a swirl. Looks almost like it's been sanded down, with different colours at different levels. But an unfinished sanding job, rather than an intentionally 'interesting' one.

actually thats what it is. its sanded down thru different level of paint. i figured most wouldnt like it.

  3. i need to find a set of abalone inlays the same as or similar to this

    Gibson_Red_Custom_Shop_SG_2.JPG

looked through the supplies section and looked on the sites and couldn't find any. Can anyone suggest a site or supplier.

    Mike :D

you could also ask huntindoug. he is always offering to cut custom inlays and mirrors when people dont even ask him. so you could ask him and im sure he would be happy to cut them for you.

  4. good stuff. i like delta and jet. make sure you wipe down the rust on that jointer with some wd 40 and some steel wool before you use it.

yeah I was wondering about that, same with some of the stains on the other stuff.. im curious though if I rub it could I throw off the level surface and make a low spot? Maybe I'm over analyzing..

and it all started just trying to find a decent bandsaw, and I couldn't let it all go...

naw no way. thats hardened steel your talking about. there isnt very much you could do to damage it. rub away.

  5. yes that is compared to the 81/85 combo. ive never used the 81/81 or ther 81/60. but it seems like the guitarheads neck pickup is just like the 60. great mids and low end, great for rythm. yes you can get harmonics very easily with them. but i dont know how consistant these are. i have only used one set. i pulled these out of my v to put on this guitar.

  6. you said they were the best metal pickups youve ever heard, thats a pretty bold statement! how do you think they stack up against emgs? i was considering buy a set of emg 81s for my gibson sg, however the guitarhead pups seem like a steal as far as active pups go. how do they sound and measure up to emgs?

they sound better than the emgs ive tried. ive tried emgs in a jackson dk and an esp viper. i think they have a much crisper sound and a ton of mids wich is what i like. you definitly need a neck pickup tho because the bridge doesnt have very good cleans just like emgs. but i have never tried guitarheads in a set or neck thru guitar. i think they will sound better. i dont think i will ever use emgs again.

  7. Nice Build! Im diggin Les Pauls and plan to build one after the Tele's finished. One thing Im curious about is you drilled the bridge holes before the neck/fingerboard was fitted, will the scale length land in the right spot? -Vinny

yes it will. the body template was made for a 22 fret 24.75" scale length neck and thats what the neck will be. i have measured it out where the neck will sit, and it works. but ya i dont really like doing it this way though.

  8. Nice! Only thing I'd change would be to reverse the headstock, but it's too late now :D What kind of pickups are those?

they are active pickups from guitarheads. 1/3 the price of emgs and are the best sounding metal pickups i have ever heard. dead quiet without sheilding. i think i will go with gold or black hardware instead. i cant choose between those.

  9. Can you use sanding sealer on an epoxy filled guitar?

The guitar is half maple and the maple didn't get filled with epoxy.

I just want to sand and seal it all at once.

    Thanks,

    Mike

im pretty sure you can. i dont see why sanding sealer and epoxy would react with each other. but if your really unsure try it on a piece of scrap wood. but i am sure it will be fine
