I found a similar finish on a guitar I was stripping. I took a small propane torch, and carefully applied heat to the surface. The finish literally popped off in small patches as the flames passed over. Really wierd, but it worked. Now I did get a couple of scorch marks but I wasn't concerned about them as I will be putting on a pearl white finish. So for what it's worth, this is how I did it. Good Luck to you.
