  1. Some of the flame shows up in the neck too.
  2. Here is the back of the body, this is the anigre- it has a nice flame to it.
  3. I went around the edge of the top with a router to get a nice clean line to carve down too. The neck and fret board. http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb135/m...ar/PICT0024.jpg http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb135/m...ar/PICT0023.jpg
  4. Hi everybody, just wanted to share some pics of my new project. The body is anigre and spalted maple. The neck is made up of anigre, rosewood, and maple. The fret board will be cocobolo and have maple inlays. I'll have one volume and one tone with a three way switch.
  5. I'm going to give precat lacquer a try. It cures harder than nitro lacquer and is chemical, mar, and UV resistant.
  6. I like the yellowish/green to green on that body. Really nice. Now I need to go by some green stain for my next build.
  7. I use Gemini lacquers. They make a precat lacquer that I would like to use. I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the info.
  8. Has anyone used precatalyzed lacquers for finishing a guitar? Just wanting to know any information about it. I have read that it is a harder finish and it is chemical, moisture, mar, and uv resistant.
  9. GregP, I used guitar frets- large size from a well know supplier, it's what I had on hand and they work well. There is a truss rod, same style as gibson uses on their LP's. Here are some more pics, sorry but no progress pics, next time I do this i'll remember.
  10. You could use a semi-gloss lacquer, if it's too glossy just sand it with 1200 grit paper and go over it with a cotton ragg and polish to bring back some shine.
  11. Thanks everybody! GregP- All the sides on the box are 3/16" inch. I constructed the box like an acoustic guitar. It has a neck and tail block with linings to support the top and back. I also added an X brace to the top for strength. After the box was all glued up it had a pretty nice ring to it (for a cigar box). I went to the local guitar shop and played a few mandolins just to compare sound and the cigar box is surprisingly nice. The best part is the price. I spent about $60.00 for the parts.
  12. Just wanted to share my latest build. I had some wood scraps from past guitar builds and decided to use them. The neck is mahogany and maple with cocobolo venere and the fingerboard is cocobolo.
  13. you could use a 4 inch diameter pipe and a propane torch as your bending iron. LMII has some info on bending figured maple. I'll be building my first acoustic guitar soon so I have been reading as much as possible on the subject. There is also some videos on youtube of a guy bending acoustic guitar sides. For bending wood, one of the books I bought says to soak the wood for 10 mins in hot water and then go to it with the bending iron. Hope that helps some.
  14. What type of glue do you use with the cocobolo? I hear it can be tough to glue. I used an exotic hardwoods epoxy that has worked so far.
  15. I'll give this a try. Name "Acanthus" Guitar of my own design. 24.75 scale lenght Neck: mahogany/ cocobolo Fret Board: rose wood, maple inlay Body: mahogany back, flamed maple top, cocobolo pickup holders AlnicoII pro pickups, bridge and neck gotoh tuners shaped nut and now for pics:
  16. Thanks everybody. I got the idea to carve on the body after seeing some guitars at the rock and roll hall of fame and museum. That's a fun place to walk through.
  17. You could use a spung, tooth brush, and a feather. Use these to create a base texture then glaze over it with a transparent color and repeat the texturing to add depth. Glaze over it with different colors to create transitions in the granit. Use the feather to make viens.
  18. I used Danish Oil. To me it brings out the grain and makes it pop.
  19. If you want to distress the look of your guitar you could roll a rock over it a few times.
  20. On this one I oiled three times allowing it dry inbetween. I then let it sit for 2 weeks and gave it a lacquer finish. sorry for all the dust.
