  1. Here are a couple of boards I picked up on the bay today. The 3 flatsawn boards I might use to try laminating some blanks. The big piece of quartersawn maple looks like it has a couple of necks in it, I have a little room to get it down to 3/4". As for the paduak I really have no idea. Maybe laminate it with the maple? Any ideas. This is really the first time I have bought wood not labled as a neck blank. How did I do?

  2. Ok, I have been looking around at wood and I have few questions. How would a neck out of only bloodwood be? Would it be a better to laminate it with something? How about paduak? I am hoping that I can get away without having to fork out $20 a neck for carbon rods as Im still kind of in the learning stage. I guess you get what you pay for though. Anyway, any comments are appreciated.

  3. Well, ideally I would look for 1/4 sawn. If I had a piece that was flatsawn I would probably use some carbon fiber rods. Im bassically building bolt on neck guitars. I will try glued in necks soon. I play mainly punk/rock so a gritty bridge pickup sound is what Im going for overall but I by no way want to limit my options for building.

  4. I am just starting out building so I figure I should try and stock up on woods. I have been working with hard maple for necks and have liked it but I am curious as to what else is available for making one piece necks. By one piece I mean neck with seperate fingerboard. I may try a laminate neck down the road but I have very few tools at this point and cutting the neck out of a single piece works best for me at this point. Anyway, Warmoth has a whole list of woods used for necks, which of these have you guys had experience with and what do you like to use?

    Bocote

    Bubinga

    Canary

    Cocobolo

    Goncalo Alves

    Koa

    Limba

    Padouk

    Pau Ferro

    Walnut

    Ziricote

  5. I would think that the best way to start would be to take some steel wool to the rusty areas and try to clean up the mess. I would pay particular attention to the top. Hopefully it hasnt pitted at all (unlikely). You could probably use a fine sandpaper to really smooth it out (the top). For the rest of the body just sand that mess of and paint it up with whatever. I know there is a Krylon spraypaint for metal/rust resistance. Morben's link looks like a good bet too. Maybe give it some flames, monster garage style :D Good luck with it.

  6. Thanks for all the ideas. Here is what I think im going to do. Im going to make a new neck with my last blank. For this one I'll just move the nut about 1/2" toward the heel esentially shortening the whole neck 1/2" and allowing the bridge some extra room. This way my neck pocket route wont have to change and I can stick with the 25.5 scale. Now a question that I was going to ask in another thread. For those who use a stewmac hotrod truss rod how long is your actual route for it? If it will be adjusted from the heel how far from the nut do you stop? Thanks again!

  7. Rhodes, when i set up the hardware (fenderhardtail bridge and humbucker mounting ring) the two touched eachother. It looked kind of odd to me. I am worried that if I were able to lengthen the pocket as Wes said that the fit would suffer. How much would you guys suggest I move lengthen it? Maybe I could fill the route and redo it a bit closer to the neck pocket. :D

  8. thanks Wes! My main thing was not wanting to make a new neck. I was hoping to simply get the 26.18" fretboard and attach it to the existing neck I have been working on. LMI says they are 22 fret so I know there will be overhang. I couldnt really extend the neck pocket at this point because then the neck would be scrap. Any ideas?

  9. Well here is my problem. I have a body and routed the neck pocket and the single bridge humbucker route. Turns out that I routed the humbucer too far back on the body. Now with the 25.5" scale I origionally intended on places the bridge only about 5/8" away from the route. LMI sells a 26.15ish scale fretboard. This would allow me to move the bridge back to a descent distange from the humbucker. Does anyone have any ideas about any other ramifications of this change. I would imagine that I would have at least a 3/8" overhang but thats fine as I only have the bridge pickup. Also the neck is already cut out and was set up for the 25.5" scale. I can't figure out if this will also be an issue. Thanks guys!
