  2. VAI.....i just saw a solo of his that someone has a link to in these forums.....HOLY CRAP!!! VAI ALL THE WAY!!!!
  3. male.....15......suck at guitar, but try anyway
  4. I'm not sure when this project is going to begin, so I'm not positive yet on the woods. But so far I'm thinking a quilted maple top, a cheap body wood, maybe you could give me some suggestions?, an ebony fretboard, and whatever necks are usually made of, maple is it? I'm a newbie, so I hope to get some more information before i go any further with this idea. Two other questions, (very newbish), in that first picture of the nice quilt, would that be able to be made a uniform color, or would some areas be noticably darker than others. Also, could you, for a fee, pre-slot fretboards if they are available. Thanks. Neal
  5. Hi. I am considering starting a project and I was wondering if you could get other woods to be used for the main body, neck, fingerboard, etc. If so, could you please give me some estimates. Thanks. Neal
  6. I'm considering building a guita, and am wondering how easy it would be to get a one-piece maple top for a drop top. I like one-piece's, and really want to do a drop top. Any tips? Also, should I stain the top before or after i put it on the body? Thanks. Neal
  7. Well I got a little bit past 1/4 turn and it started to get hard to turn. I reattached the neck and strung it, and there is some improvement, but it still isn't close to straight. What should I do? Thanks for your help. Neal
  8. You COULD, if you really felt inclined to be a problem solver, click on my email link. . That would help tremendously. Thanks a lot. Neal
  9. I have done a little bit of reading, and from what I have noticed so far, I believe that the neck is in a frontbow. Could anyone verify this using the measurements I provided. Correcting this would involve tightening the truss rod, correct? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Neal
  10. I thought I would give you some information if I'm going to ask you for help. I've done some rough measuring, and have some approximations that are fairly accurate, but not totally precise. I only had a standard ruler, but this is what I came up with: All saddles have approx. 4mm between bottom of saddle and top of bridge base, with slight compensation for the radius of the fretboard. I got some of the rust to give, and could move all of the screws except for the low E on the low E side. It wouldnt budge, and it was at about 4mm, so I just roughly adjusted the rest to match and retuned it. Action measurements: E string- 1.5mm at 1st fret, 6mm at 12th, 5.5mm at 20th(just realized it only has 20 frets, what a newbie ) A string- 1.5mm at 1st fret, 5mm at 12th, 4.5mm at 20th D string- 1.5mm at 1st fret, 5mm at 12th, 4.5mm at 20th G string- 1.5mm at 1st fret, 5mm at 12th, 5mm at 20th All of these measurements are approximate. Please help me diagnose neck problems, and if it requires truss adjustment, can you give me a quick runthrough of what is necessary? As stated previously, I'm a newbie, and I would greatly appreciate any help you guys could give. Thanks. Neal
  11. Hi. I want to do a sunburst finish on my 83 p-bass and 'relic' it to give it a nice vintage look. Everything else is worn, but i don't like the way relic finishes look on anything except for sunbursts (ex: SRV, Rory Gallagher) and i would like to create a relic finish. I was wondering if it is easier to do a sunburst with spray cans or with brush-on stains. Please give your opinion, as well as what brands of finish you recommend. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. Neal
  12. How would duct tape over the pickups sound? Right now it has one black pickup and one with a silver guard. If i took off the silver guard, would it just be a regular looking pickup, or would it look different than the normal exposed humbuckers? I also have an 83' P-Bass that i might relic.....if i can get the darned thing to play(I got it for 25 bucks at a flea market, and it's in the kind of condition that makes me wonder if 25 bucks was a good deal..... ) Thansk for the input. Neal
  13. I want it to look somewhat original, so i think i'm going to replace the bridge with a normal p-bass replacement. The crack in the headstock is only on the headstock, extending from the bottom curve on the left hand side directly up to the low e tuning machine I don't think i'll do anything with the neck until i get a new bridge on. This summer i'm going to work on 3 or 4 guitars, so i'll just add this one in, too I'm thinking about refinishing it, what do you guys think of relic finishes. It's an 83, and already is getting some of that vintage look and feel to it, and i think a relic finish would compliment that. I might not even refinish it, just take a screwdriver and sandpaper to it. What do you guys think? I really appreciate your help in this matter. Neal
  14. I got a american made 83' p-bass for 25 bucks. It is totally fried. The electronics work, and that's about it. The knobs crackle, the pickguard's cracked, the bridge is rusted into place and badly out of whack, the neck may or may not have a whole slew of problems(it's either the neck or the bridge), and there's a pretty big crack in the headstock. Here are some of the major problems: #1- I can't adjust the bridge saddles, and they are at problematic heights(low E and high E have at least 1/4 inch height differential) #2- I'm getting major buzz on some strings, and on the others the action is almost an inch off the board at the 24th fret #3- I'm a newbie and can't fix any of the problems #4- I am clueless PLEASE HELP. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. I can't thank you guys enough. Neal
  15. Does anyone have the tutorial or a rough idea of how to do a swirl. Any help would be appreciated. Neal
  16. does anyone know what happened to the tutorial on swirling bodies in the tutorial section? It hasn't been working for me. I want to do a swirl finish over the summer, and want to learn some stuff about them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Neal
  17. I'm planning a couple summer projects for my guitars. I'm planning now, because I figure if I don't throw out the idea by summer, it might actually look decent. This is what I'm thinking: rg550(currently all black)-strip body and do a red stain(possibly burnt, depends on grain), leave black pickguard, put on red bobbins and knobs and switch cover, and stain headstock to match rg120(red)- swirl in colors to be determined and put on corresponding bobbins les paul copy- possibly duct tape finish, possibly relic finish, i just have to make it so that you can't see the wood(it's either real cheap plywood or maybe even particle board), and do something cool with pickups to match. Maybe i'll just paint it, but i have to figure out the color scheme. give me some ideas I'm going to use lots of info i have picked up from this forum and the tutorials. I thanks all of you guys in advance for helping me out. You have been able to bear my stupid noobie posts and give me some useful information. Now you are free to flame my ideas at will. Commence with the insults. Neal edit: if i put this in the wrong place, please move it. Thanks
  18. I can just see it now....A warlock body with a thick purple spraypaint enamel over it(runs and all), then relic'd on the back of a truck. Perfect piece of wood to use for a cheap strat copy or something, smash it up on stage.....yeah... Seriously though, that is THE ABSOLUTE BEST piece of wood I have ever seen.....great find.
  19. Ok. Thanks for the replies. Now it's time for me to decide whether I'm going to put in new pickups. Anyone know where to get some nice-sounding ones for cheap? I'll post this in another thread. Thanks for your help. Neal
  20. About how many wires need to be cut? What about the input jack? Also, how hard is it to resolder together, as it seems like it will be a bit cramped? Thanks for the help. Neal
  21. Sorry to pester you guys.....but how much desoldering/soldering is involved? I would like to refinish it, but I don't have a very good history with electronics, and I would rather have an ugly, but playable guitar than a pretty, unplayable one. Is there a tutorial anywhere for inept people like me. Any Guitar Hardware Removal books for Dummies available? Any tips? Thanks. Neal
  22. Is it necessary to desolder anything? I don't have a soldering iron, even though i learned how to use one. However, the thought of having to desolder and solder the electronics is a bit unnerving. What is the simplest way to get a body ready for stripping(with chemicals), and staining. If it's any help, i have an rg550 series from 1996(i think). Thanks for your help. Neal
  23. Hi. I am going to attempt to refinish my first guitar. I have an rg550 in dire need of a new paint job(or, in this case, a nice red stain). However, I have no experience with removing the tremolo, pickups, and other hardware. I can't find a tutorial, and i don't want to mess things up by trying something that i don't know how to do. If someone can give me a quick rundown or a link to a tutorial on basic hardware removal, i will be forever in your debt . Thanks. Neal
  24. Hi. I am going to refinish my rg550 in a red stain, and i was wondering what the best way to strip the body would be. I'm not really good at using a sander, and my last attempt didn't turn out well. I am looking to do this over april vacation, so i have to be able to finish the entire process in a day or two. So far, after reading the tutorials, stripping the paint with chemicals seems like the best option. Anyone know the price for the amount of paint stripper needed to do a guitar body? Is acetone necessary? If i sand the body, do Ibanez guitars have a sealer? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Neal
  25. Thanks for yor help. This project is gonna start in the summer, so ill buy a kit later. Now back to planning my rg550 refinish.......Mwahahahahaha
