  1. I've looked all over for that tutorial. Can you hook me up with a link? Or, email it to me? PLEASE? harrybrown43@hotmail.com Thanks!
  2. Now there is a tutorial for you. Thanks for the info. Looks great!
  3. Looks cool. I think I see a beaver and tt's in there.
  4. Thanks for the info, makes me feel a little better. I can see if it is verneer how they can sell it for that since you can cut it with a knife. I thought there was some magical machine out there that good old "hand made" couldn't compete with. I checked out your web page. How do you cut inlays efficiently? How do you cut the wood? I done everything by hand, the pearl, the abalone, and wood all by hand. Quite time consuming. There were so many points and islands in my design, I cut the wood with an Xacto knife and a modified dental tool that was like a miniture scraper.. razer sharp. Another reason was that a dremel base would not work well on the contour of the guitar. Thanks for any help!
  5. This is quite an elaborate inlay. I wonder how they can afford to sell at this price. Anyone seen one of these up close? I was wondering the quality of this inlay. At the price it sits now, $127.00, the inlay material cost more than that. Beats me! No way I could ever compete with prices like that. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...3716144512&rd=1
  6. Thanks for all the compliments guys!! It is an inspiration for me to continue. I will get to work on the tutorial. Never done one before, but I think I can manage. Yes, in some of the pictures, the neck Pickup is in backwards. My ignorance. Someone did point it out before I got the strings on though. I must get more pictures so that I can put that behind me. It is kind of funny though. I am only trying to keep you guys on your toes, making sure you catch things like that. Greg P, If you are thinking about doing the fret board, then I bet you will be able to do it. Take your time, and work with a few scrap pieces 1st. You will get the hang of it. Like I said, I'll get working on a tutorial. Little Bit, I know you didn't say the Motorcycle lady concept was tacky, but the general feeling I got from the thread was that it was tacky. There was one post that specifically said it was tacky. I just wanted a few more opinions before I invested the time in completing the design. I think I will keep the design as is, but I won't do it unless someone wants it. I will work on a new concept design. Thanks again for your honesty. Daveq, I used filler, but I cut the entire inlay pocket by hand, so it was a very good fit. There were not too many places that you could actually see the epoxy. In addition, I colored the epoxy white for gluing the pearl, and colored it black for gluing the Abalone. The epoxy I used was superglue quickset epoxy. It is in a red package, you can find it at Target for about $2.00. Thanks again to everyone for their compliments. I will get to work on the tutorial. And, I am going to scrap the Motorcycle lady and leave it in archive in case someone wants it. I can't afford to do something that wont sell.
  7. I'm new, but have gandered here for a week or so. Thought I'd post pics of my 1st inlay project, that included my 1st guitar refinish project too. It was a lot of work, but I really like it. . If I can make it cost effective, I am thinking of doing this work on the side. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/im181owne...arProject.shtml Here is a concept inlay I have came up with. Most on another forum think it is tacky, and think I should come up with something else. What do you think? Thanks for your input. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/im181owne...lay_concept.jpg
  8. I don't think you will have a problem drilling the MOP, just drill it slow, and start with as small of a hole as you can. I used a dremel bit to drill it, but the dremel bit has several cutting edges. A drill only has two, so you'll need to progress through the pearl slow.
  9. I have not bought anything from these people, but they have some really cool looking shells. They say verneer, but I am not sure how thick they are. Don't know about price either. http://www.aquabluemaui.com/veneers.html This place has a bit of everything. http://www.mopsupplies.com/index.html
  10. Thanks for the compliment. I'd like to take credit for the design, but I can't most of it was copied from a t-shirt. I modified it a little bit that made it a lot more difficult, but it came out OK. It was quite a bit of work. The difficulty is that the LP body is contoured in various directions. As for the arm band, that is a plan that I have, coming off the cash for it is another story. Thanks to you also. Believe it or not, this is my 1st attempt at doing inlay, and really my 1st finishing job. I coated some autographs with lacquer to preserve them so I could play the guitar, but that was it before this job. I am now trying to get a little side business going doing inlay work. I have been trying to figure out how to advertise this guitar to get more work. I even give thought of giving it to the right band member. I'd like to see it in a video one day. . Maybe wishful thinking, but we can all dream. Here is a link with progress pictures: http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/im181owne...arProject.shtml Thanks again!
  11. Sorry I'm chiming in late here, but I'm new. I masked my inlay off. Use a magnifying glass to get it real good with an Xacto knife. I used something similar to this: http://www.dickblick.com/zz252/01/products...am=0&ig_id=1593 It's like the stuff that comes on the display of a new item ie watch face, radio lcd display. Things like that. 1st mask it, paint it, put the mask off CAREFULL not to pull paint, it helps to do under manifier and use Xacto. Then, clear coat several coats to build the inlay area up to the color coat level, wet sand. Mine turned out well. See Links below for pics. Good Luck!!
  12. Clavin, This is my concept, I think it would be a little easier if I could engrave some of it. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/im181owne...lay_concept.jpg Thanks for your interest.
  13. Thanks for the compliment. Means a lot from someone like you. I done the searches, but nothing came up. Can anyone help me locate this thread? I'll do my homework before I ask questions. Thanks, and ON!
  14. Hi, I am new here, and am pretty new to inlay, but I think I got a nack for it. You can see a couple pictures of my 1st attempt in my signiture links. I have a new concept, but don't know much about engraving. It isn't complete, but you can see it here: http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/im181owne...lay_concept.jpg I think it would make things much easier if I could do some of it engraved. Would you mind giving me some pointers? How is it done, and do you use ink or dye or somethign to fill in the engraved lines? If so, how do you keep it from bing wiped out? Do you coat it with something? Thanks for any help!
