  2. hey guys a friend of mine banged his guitar off a table and now has a crack down the back of his acoustic taylor going along the grain. iv never had to fix somthing like this. im not saying im going to fix it im just wondering the best way to fix it. thanks alot im probably taking it to my mentor that taught me evertthing i know but he is away for the next few days. my friend is freaking out, i just want an answer on how we will fix it so he will calm down lol
  3. well i believe the frets are jumbo frets. im used to playing gibsons that have a shorter frets. im not looking to go crazy. i kno id have to crown the frets and all that fun stuff. im thinking about making the jumbo frets itno mediums thats all. the frets are not worn. its a perfectly good guitar that hasnt sold thats all. id like to keep it. i can crown and level frets fine, i have no problem. but im still a bit scared to try to replace an intire fretboad. am practicing on a junk neck, i dont wanna ruin this guitar by replacing the frets
  4. i am getting a yamaha to work on. just to mod it up make it play nice. i am getting it for cheap for doing some work at a local music store. but anyways i dont like the frets. there to tall for me. it needs a fret dress because some frets are two high anyways. should can i level them down a bit to make them a little shorter. would this effect the guitars playbilty. its a 25.5 scale lenght. sorry if this queston is confusing i was having touble wording it.
  5. my dad and i share a shop. we have not had a drill press in about 8 years. we FINALLY got one!!! Delta® 16-1/2" Drill Press w/ Laser. got it for 350. i love it. having a drill press just makes life so much easyer
  6. hey guys. i use this site for everything i need to kno. i normally just search because the info is already here. i am a carpenter that loves to work on guitars. i have guitar players repair guide by dan erlewine. im looking to get another book on the subject. is it worth getting Fret Work Step By Step by dan erlewine? or does it just cover the info that is already in the repair guide. i also have Building Electric Guitars By Martin Koch and Make Your Own Electric Guitar Melvyn Hiscock. do you think that if i get the fret work its just going to repeat info i already have read about? i dont plan on jumping in to fretwork till after xmas because i am asking for alot of tools for xmass. thanks guys for all your info. you guys have helped me so much. this website has everything i dont even have to post its already here. i would be lost without this site
  7. my sg has got its fair share of scrachs. got some nasty scraches in the back. alot of dings on the headstock. i put some sanding sealer on it just to protect it. now its got a nice scar. iv also hurd you can put nail polish on it. im not going to put any on it im just wondering if this is true
  8. dany carey rules. he is jsut so amazing and he is better when u see him live. i have more then one guitar. but all the other guitars i have are "frankinsten" guitars. iv put them 2gether using other guitars or made some bodys and put a neck on it. my SG is my only guitar is from a company lol
  9. yea i dont want to sand it and get it painted. im going to check out the sanding sealer and maybe just put a little on to keep mosture out. if it was anywere else i wouldent be worried but i kno that when i am done with a gig my guitar is soaked with sweat. i would rather be safe then sorry lol the first time i saw tool i bot general admiss tickets. i thought about going to the pit but the show wasnt going to start for like an hour when i got there so i grabed the closest seats to the stage. i ended up sitting 4 rows away from the stage. i could see everything perfectly. best show i ever saw. they played for a little longer then 2 hours. it was up in new hampshire and teh show didnt even sell out! iv hurd of puscifer its a little weird. but i only hurd one song im sure ill like the rest. thanks alot guys you have been real helpful
  10. thanks man. ill talk to my bros girlfriend and hope som1 else posts and knows what to do. i dont want the wood to get exposed to sweat all the time. im hoping a dab of sealer will touch it up. i dont care if it matchs really. its hard on me because this was my first guitar. and it plays so well. yea tool does rock. i luckly got 2 see them twice
  11. the chip is were my arm meets the guitar basicly. and i think the sealer might ahve come off to. i can feel the wood. i would leave it alone if it was somewere else on the guitar( there are a few chips in other places) but when i play at shows or osmthing i tend to sweat. and its literaly right were my arm meets the guitar when i play. should i put just a dab of sealer back on it? i really dont care about matching hte paint at this stage. my brothers girlfriend is an autobody tech. she is good at repairs to. i was thinking of asking her for a little bit of sealer and maybe just a dab of the closes paint we can match. sound good or am i way off? someone also mentioned superglue as a sealer on another site.
  12. man my sg just got knocked over. now there is a chip in the paint. how can i seal this up. i dont want the wood being exposed. its is a circle about an inch wide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im not worried about matching up the paint (witch is probably like candy apple red if best discribed). i jsut want to seal it
  13. hey im new to the sign. but from broswing around i have learned alot. iv been fixing guitars for about 3 years and i have been trying to make guitars for about 2 years. im between guitar making projects right now, but i just got an old Ibanez EX series guitar. from my research the guitar was made in 1993 and is the better quality model of the EX series because of the white Ibanez logo on the headstock. The cheaper models have purple or red writing. I looked at a picture online and the more expencive ones had white. but the picture was blurry. I got the guitar for free from my neighbor for doing some work. It has an EMG 85 pickup in the bridge. the neck releif is great on it. it was just hanging up for almost 3 years with a set of light strings on it. when i switched the strings on the guitar i used med. and the bridge is not flush with the guitar. its almost all the way pulled up. i think i know how to fix it i just want to make sure im doing it right. iv never switched gauges on a tremelo. i know im installing the strings correctly. to fix it by tighting the screws in the back that are holding the springs (3 in this case). if that is the case should i lossen the strings at the tuners? i know to keep the lock at the nut unlocked. this is the first time iv had to adjust the floyd rose before. i know after this to fix the intonation but thats no major problem....knock on wood. rock on! ill be posting with all the questions i have lol
