  1. I'm having some problems with a rosewood headplate not curing. I've never had this problem before with Tru-oil and rosewood. Sealed it with birchwood Casey sealer Waited 3 hours Filled with oil based filler Wait 24 hours Sand 320 Sealed again Wait 3 hours Filled again Wait 24 hours Sand 320 Sealed again Wait 24 hours Start applying TO Everything was fine until the 3rd coat of Tru oil Now it just gets "gummy" and soft when I hit it with scotchbrite. Any ideas what I should do?? I heard I should have wiped with denatured alcohol before sealing for the first time. Anyone try this?

  3. 2nd round of pore filling. getting smoother.
  4. Scratch the z-poxy. I just couldn't get it to smooth out like u experts. :-) ....so, back to old reliable. (first pic) 2 coats of B.C. sealer/filler (second pic) grain fill with dark mahogany filler waiting for the filler to dry before i sand it back with 320. i was going to just use the B.C. for the filler and skip the mahogany fill, but some of the pores looked pretty big.
  5. yup, tru-oil, about 10 coats. i play a lot of punk, so i'm constantly hitting the guard. not even close to wearing off the finish. more problems with my belt buckle on the back..but hey...it adds character right? LOL
  6. i have a koa pickguard on a guitar i made last year. i gig with it a couple times a month. no problems at all.
  7. interesting.... do u have any pics or a documented process for z-poxy & tru-oil? i heard that any unreacted z-poxy will cause problems when the tru-oil hits it.
  8. the problem with the slurry is, i have many different woods and don't want a rosewood slurry to get into the mahogany, so i nice clear filler would be perfect. do u use anything in between the z-poxy and tru-oil??? also, when sanding the z-poxy, am i just trying to remove the shine with 320 grit sandpaper? i tried to sand the z-poxy with 320 grit, but it seems like some areas looks blotchy and gummy...not consistent. do u have any pics of your process? feel free to e-mail me directly at madhattr88@gmail.com i absolutely LOVE your finishes!!!!
  9. i'm going to try Tru-oil over top of the sanded down Z-poxy. cross your fingers! LOL!
  10. decided to use Z-poxy for grain filler. Second coat.
  11. micro-bead acrylic paste filler i didn't want to add any color filler... any luck with epoxy?
  12. When I started to build guitars I was using exactly that finish but at some point they had restrictions about inflammable material shipping which was a problem and they could not ship it anymore oversea... You can also find it at LMII Just be carefull it's not a true pore-filler, its only a thicker solution to make it easier when building a soundboard for exemple (or any softwood) to avoid saturation to prevent the wood from absorbing crazy the finish which would be detrimental on an acoustic instrument for exemple... BTW I could spend all day smelling that stuff, I love the smell so what would u use for a grain filler on something like mahogany or rosewood?
  13. thanks guys!!! i think i'm going to tru-oil the whole thing. usually i fill with a dark mahogany filler, but the natural color in this thing is quite nice. i ordered some tru-oil filler/sealer. anyone use this stuff yet? think it will fill the pores?
  14. I've done several guitars in Tru-oil, but never used their filler/sealer. Just ordered a 3oz bottle. Anyone try it yet???
  15. just an idea i had. mahogany body with rosewood, sapele and spruce tops "wood sandwich"
  16. Thanks! I am reading a couple books right now. I did my last build with a behlens red stain and used Tru-oil for the clear coats. Came out really nice. I wanted to do the same, but paint the mahogany body with re-ranch cream. Do u think the Tru-oil would be a problem on top of it??
