    yeh, i went through a slipknot phase too. (didnt last very long im happy to say) it kinda progressed into some dream theater and incubus now i'll listen to anything.. what goes around comes around

    lol... dont worry bout it... was just a crack on the additives found in couloring and flavouring products which when consumed can have detrimental effects on human behaviour.

    Im sure you'll find a way.. its just about holding it still whilst you do it and not damaging any of the hard work. make sure you post a pic when its done

    you certainly got a good deal. Its perhaps because it doesnt claim to be a neck blank that you havent been charged over the odds for it. nice little bit of figuring in the maple there. Id be tempted to try for a maple/paduak/bloodwood/paduak/maple laminate neck with that selection, then theres a kind of contrasting fade from creamy yellow to red and back. although from the thicknesses you may end up 'wasting' a fair deal of wood, the more slices you laminate. though saying that, from the prices i think you can afford to.

    Just a quick question.. When building a neck through, would it be better to angle down the neck part or the body part of the neck through blank. Presumably its easier to leave the neck in line with the straight edge as there is more of it than body but i wouldnt be sure.

    The workmanship is great. Nice to see that people can still sculpt without a computer and CAD/CAM routers and the like. Still.. not really my thing.. too pointy

    Damn thats nice from a distance it looks black, but when you get close you see a beautiful grain. Fantastic. Thanks a lot. Id love to come out at the end with something like that. I was originally (before i got some ash) hoping to pick up some quilted maple, and going for a carriburst sort of thing, but that looks great. Now to crack on building it

    Yeh, it is pretty heavy. Im thinking im gonna need a few cavities in the body to keep the weight from being back breaking. Perhaps i should just go for a natural kind of finish. Do you have any pics of this kind of effect so i can get some ideas? Thanks Alex

    Thanks for the suggestions: The maple isnt wide enough for a body blank. This mahogany-esque stuff i cant remember the name of. It looks like mahogony, and has an interesting grain pattern (not particularly straight) leading me to think it'll look good but be a touch unfriendly to work with. Really, i'd love a carved top, through neck guitar, probably using the ash as the top, although i've not used it before so wouldnt know how well it would shape. I think using the mahogany stuff would be a bit too difficult to carve. What are your experiences with using ash for carved tops (if any). How well does it finish, for example by staining it?     Hi all I've been surfing through the forum for some time now as a non-member and decided it was time to join up. I've never built a guitar before but have built a bass and an electric upright bass. I just got some wood from a local carpentry shop (very cheap) and was thinking of what to do with it. I picked up a slab of maple (big enough for a through neck) some ash and some faux mahogany. I was leaning towards a kind of les paul design. I'm also very interested in a jazz kind of style. Any ideas what i should do with it? Alex
