  1. That's funny because I had been thinking that I might try a Fred. Why no to active though?
  2. I actually like the idea of not having a middle pickup. I had a strat that had only two single coils but I did a complete overhaul. I changed the pickups (stock pickups) with 2 texas specials (with opposite polarity to each other) hooked up to a special 4way switch (neck/bridge/parallel/series). I think strats look good with only two single coils (neck/bridge)
  3. I have two projects going on right now and I need some ideas on what to use for pickups #1- my 'lead' guitar - This guitar will be a double cutaway likely a strat because I like pickguards and the versatility that goes with it. What should I use for a pup configuation and which pickups to use. I'm pretty much decided on basswood. #2 - my other guitar -This guitar is a Les Paul shape (so the maple/mahogany combo applies here) HxH pickup configuation. I've used some EMGs (81,85,60A) But if I go that route I want versatility (81TW/89R) I also like Dimarzios (super 3, steve's special, evolution bridge, X2N) but I'm open to something different. I'm actually very partial to Dimarzios because of the sound AND color selection (aethetics are important to me) I've never really tried Duncans (I had a duncan designed (JB) in a Jackson but I didn't like it with the alder body) I generally play hard rock and some metal. My amp is a Marshall AVT. Any suggestions would be welcome.
  4. Yeah I figured out last night that it was a 25.5 24 fret (I now know that it makes a difference). The problem is finding a 24 fret neck. The 24s from warmoth won't work because of the fact that they are extension necks. Anybody got an Omen bolt-on 24? Thanks for helping me see my own stupidity, guys!
  5. Thanks Rick I'll try that too. When I measured for scale I measured total distance based on the fact that knew the neck was a 25.5'' but I could be wrong.
  6. I'm pretty sure all fretted note were sharp. For all that I have researched about guitars I know nothing of intonation. How would I adjust the bridge (TOM) if it were that. I know they have screws in the back but what would I listen for? I'll also measure scale again to see if I can come up with any clues if it's not the intonation
  7. I have to start from the beginning. About nine months ago I bought a guitar body off of ebay. I'm pretty sure the description was right. It said it was a Schecter Omen TOM/string thru made of Basswood. I threw an EMG 81/85 combo in there and stuck my favorite Squier bolt-on neck on it. I thought it sounded awesome but needed to be tuned. Lo and behold after 15 minutes of double and triple checking my tuning it still sounded out of tune. I finally figured out that the scale wasn't right. I've checked specs and the Omen is (at least now it is) a 25.5'' scale. I'm pretty sure (although I'm not sure why) that this guitar body is suppose to have a 24.75'' scale neck. The other thought I had was a question. Is there a difference between a 22 fret 25.5 and a 24 fret 25.5''(because the fender neck is 22 frets and the original neck was 24)? can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks
  8. While were discussing the recessed TOM how far in does it need to recessed on a flat top. I'm building a Dinky type gone bad that I want a recessed TOM on. What is the common depth of the recess. About the headstocks, I think 3+3 should be tilt back. I also agree that inlines do look kinda funny tilted.
  9. I have to agree that most acoustics are not made to play standing up although even my strat I have wear a sweatband while playing standing up otherwise my arm is raw or bleeding after 45 minutes. My favorite shapes are the firebird, schester tempest, and mockingbird but the most comfortable I find is the strat. The les Paul is in second because of the balance. the weight of the les paul doesn't bother me because after I regularly played a acrylic mockingbird, anything seemed far lighter. Those acrylics will break your back!!
  10. I have seen the pictures... I think I'm gonna like this. It looked like the guitarist had a jag trem on it too. The body is almost painted. The green is somewhat close to sherwood green. Besides the white pickguard and the blackness of the EMGs, everything is going to be chrome. It kinda stinks that my idea wasn't original, though. Any suggestions as to what the finish should be. I was gonna put a light finish of nitro in the aerosol cans from stewmac. My resources are pretty limited and so is my budget. Thanks.
  11. My first amp that i bought was a Behringer GX110. i liked it and in some cases (recording especially) prefferred over the AVT100. I sold it because I thought I didn't need it. I have a vox for a practice amp. I think that if it takes too long for me to save the money for a Randall module head and a marshall cabinet (the one that's $315) i'll cave and get a Behringer half stack.
  12. well to be honest I just like the body style and the balance of the firebird. I detest mini-buckers. They look like bucker wannabes (looks, not tone mind you). i could put a humbucker in the bridge that I took out of my LP goth (like '57 classic plus) but i have no neck pickup that's not an EMG other than SCs and a cheap old stock bucker. THat LP goth lead pup is the best OEM pup I've ever heard. Anyway back the subject, Green is my favorite color and if I bought the Epi firebird, I'd want different pups in it and there's not much selection as far as minibuckers go. I put the neck on it with the pickguard in place and I believe it creates a simple but striking look. THe control cavity is like the explorer, three in a row but there's a three way toggle inthe middle (again nonfirebirdesque with it not being on the pickguard). I may put and afterburner in the their too. If not, it will probably be a tone. enough rambling. again any advise, criticism, terrorist threats, or tips are welcome.
  13. The idea for this guitar came from the fact that I liked the 70s fender headstock nad the firebird body. The neck is a squier. The body is an alder from warmoth. I've painted it green with an aerosol spray. I'll try to post some pics. I need help on the finish though. i'm having difficulty painting the sides and I don't know what to finish it with. any help is greatly appreciated. I'm putting a pair of EMGs in it. Probably a 81/81 combo. The original idea for this project was to take a strat, overhaul the electronics and give it a new body. However, I'm going to have to buy a different tremolo than what came on the original strat (it's a squier, which is a stupid mistake on my part) The body is routed for a american standard trem but I tried a wilkinson that is my firend's and it will fit. So I'll probably get a wilkinson because I like those better. I'm probably forgettting something that everyone will remind me of but i think that's it. any comments, questions, accusations, or even general dissing is welcome. Like i said before I'll try to post pics. Thanks.
  14. My AVt is made in UK. Sorry I actually didn't mean to say USA. I really want a half stack. I don't know where to go in that direction.
  15. I think it was 600 USD. i was told that Marshalls keep their value mainly because they are made in the USA.
  16. On the estern seaboard, in the great (yet obsure) state of Maine.
  17. it seems to me to be a waste of space but i have to ask a question. I have a Marshall AVT100. It's in very good condition and everything works. No dents and no scratches. I actually bought it 'used' from an online music company. They said it had been used at a trade show. Down to the point, I want to know how much I can get for this amp. I don't want to get ripped off, but I also don't want to look like an idiot. Also, does anyone have any thoughts or opinions about The Randall RM100 module head? Any helps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  18. 1)Does anyone know which Gibson pickup the Epiphone Goth Lead pickups were suppose to imitate? I know they're Alnicos which narrows it down but all's it says is hot bridge or something like that on the bottom. Could it possilby be a 498? 2) Would this type of pickup sound good in an agathis bodied strat? I've decided that I just don't like single coil pups anymore. Also, Anyone tried the DiMarzio Evolution and/or Breed pickups? Thanks.
  19. i actually haven't got them yet. i'm a little short on cash until I get paid. i'm still not sure as to what to put in. sorry
  20. I have a LP that i put a third pickup into. It has a master volume and tone. The other two pots are individual volume controls for the rythym and middle pickups. the output of these two pots are spliced into one wire that connects to the rythym side of the switch. I can get a little output out of the middle pickup (if i have o/d) but I can't hear it on the clean channel and i can't hear the rythym pickup at all. The rythym and lead are stock epi but the middle is a stock from and other guitar. Is there any holes in my theory? any help would be greatly appreciated as i need to sell this guitar to pay my bills!
  21. what is the best combination of humbucking pickups for blues and grunge. I'm particularly looking at seymour duncans but I have experience with only DiMarzios and EMGs. can someone who has used SDs help me out. I was thinking a JB/pearly gates combo or just the Pearly Gates set straight up. I don't think the sound samples on the SD site are conclusive enough to make a decision. so once again i appeal to the pickup tasters for help. Thanks.
  22. ironically, yes. When I first started playing I couldn't afford lefthanded guitars. The strats come with the bridges too, btw.
  23. I've used EB, GHS, and D'addario. I use d'addario because their cheap in bulk. i like ebs but I guess i'm not too concerned about strings. I bought some GHS boomers and those were alright but I tried their coated set and it corroded so took them off in disgust. I guess the only thing I look for in strings is a lack of corrosion. On my acoustic I use electric strings (anyone else do this?) because its easier to bend.
  24. don't sound good as in a pickup problem or is the acrylic body the problem? because I was planning on changing the pups eventually anyway. For me, unless it's like 20 pounds, weight isn't a big factor.
  25. I need to get rid of all this stuff I bought that I'm not going to use. Set of 2 Fender Texas Special pickups. one reverse. one regular. $50 set. Set of 2 EMG single coil pickups. white. one alnico magnet. one ceramic. let me know if you need the clips and jack $80 Emg EXG and Pi-2. The EXG's used and works. output wire is a little short $20. The Pi-2 has never been used. $25. two earvana nuts. one black gibson style 1 5/8''. one cream fender style 1 5/8''. $15 ea. Boss ME-50. barely used. no power supply. $200 Dunlop crybaby Wah. bought it used. dings and dents. works fine. $30 MXR phase 90. works fine. $35. two strat bodies and necks with tuning machines and string trees. no blemishes except for pick scratches. one has no strap buttons. make offer happy hunting. will work out shipping details.
