  1. If you just take the finish off there shouldnt be a problem, as you'll barely remove any wood.
  2. Sweet cheers also any one used it as a fret board? Might be kinda cool
  3. Hey I was wondering if spalt can be stored? Say if you found a killer peice but were not able to start the project right away? If you didnt seal it or something doesnt the rotting get worse? Cheers
  4. I disagree, mass production certainly removes any 'soul' from a guitar but I dont think the CNC is the reason, its as said the lack of any care for the instrument, quality control components etc, and the fact they're all identical PRS uses CNC to cut the body, and although the shape of the body is always the same, no 2 private stocks are going to be. They still have a huge amount of human input and care into the guitars, selecting the exact wood etc all the way to the final set up.
  5. As far as I'm aware sheilding is pointless on active circuits (including single coils) because EMGs are already internally sheilded or something... So I'm not sure sheilding will help anything...
  6. No one ever seems to paint neck pockets, can any one tell me why? I mean finishes are thin and as long as they were flat I cant see why it would be a problem to still have a finish on a bolt on neck pocket? Surely something must be used to at least seal the wood even if no finish is used? Cheers
  7. A CNC machine in china could make millions in the same time, to the same quality for a fraction of the price your just paying for this hype over the 'hand built quality' as if hes poured his life and soul into it and all that. (I'm no doubter of hand built guitar but $15k plane? Are you serious???)
  8. no it doesnt have to be, the swirl should stick no problem, as long as any orange peel etc is removed it should be fine.
  9. ^ why would epoxy not soak into the wood like a wood glue would (damn dont say that fast)
  10. Thats really really nice! Cant wait to see it progress!
  11. wow how old is that guitar? the fact that the head stock snapped off at the nut and snapped in half doesnt say a lot on deans part. Unless of course UPS were actually playing football with it...
  12. Amazing work! Love the guitar inlay! My favourite of the sculptures has to be the last one, the fist looks really powerful, and that moving face is a quality idea as well
  13. Weird just go to ebay.co.uk and search 'hipshot' its the first item with a £20 BIN or best offer actualy shows it as a hipshot tuner, and theres no small print that you only get one or anything.
  14. Have a look at this, 6 in line tuners for £20? They are £6 each on the hip shot website so I dont see how that can be possible? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Locking-tuners-Hipsh...1QQcmdZViewItem So its either a scam or some one is going to get them selves a bargin
  15. No I doubt it, pickups produce very little out put, and LEDs require something like 2V just to work. A circuit could be just a LED connected to a battery (as long as the voltages match) or a switch between them. If you want to use a higher voltage battery you will have to use a resitor between the LED and battery, the value of which will depend on R = V/I (an equation for determing resitance by diving the supply voltage by the current in the circuit)
  16. Hey I have a couple of questions about oil finishes for guitar that are confusing me and making me feel quite dumb for asking lol I guess I dont really understand what a tru oil or tung oil finish actualy is? Its like varnashing a guitar right? It brings out the colours of the grain for a natural looking finish? But what does it feel like to actualy play? Is it actualy just like varnishing wood where you can still feel the grain and texture of the wood but its just protected against the elements? Or does it end up smooth like a lacquer finish? I cant say I would enjoy playing a guitar that actually feels like wood (though I do like natural finishes so you can see the grain), I like resting my arms and hands on the smooth finish of lacquer. Can moisture get through oil finishes? Also I have heard shellac is the best way to bring out the grain of wood, is this true? in essence what is shellac, just another type of lacquer finish? Sorry for the essay, please dont laugh at me haha
  17. I was just getting ready to vote for one of the 8 strings when I saw Wezv's build and I was utterly blown away by that first picture, and the following did not disapoint either, its a stunning guitar, all the lines are so clean and so smooth, just amazing!
  18. Thanks for all the info guys!!! but you say make sure you have a flat base for the inlay to sit on but does that really matter? I mean if your gluing it in, and then radiusing the fretboard, surely the inlay will be flush with the f/b and the glue would have filled the space between the bottom of the route and the inlay, so its not like it will wobble of any thing?
  19. Wez what scale length would you recommend for 5 strings?
  20. How do you sheild the pickup cavities of a guitar that is going to be finished natural? Surely people would see this copper tape, or black paint?
  21. borax, and it technically strengthens surface tension so the paint floats.
  22. Hey I have like a drill/dremel type tool in like a mini pilla drill mounting (not router base) and I was wondering how you route/engrave straight lines for inlays? Like for letters etc? Do you just free hand it and hope no one notices its slightly off? I want to do a 1 (I) roman numeral into a truss rod cover, as well as f/b and head stock inlays (as yet undecided on design) and I was just wondering how its done.
  23. Will a rift sawn peice of wood be suitable for a neck? (with the rings lying at around 50 degrees) It seems to be some where between regular slab sawn and quarter sawn in terms of neck quality? (at a guess that is) Cheers
