  1. Here is a link that i found helpful. it shows how to mount it easily in a bench top for use upside down.
  2. my bridge came in yesterday and the fretboard a few days ago. im sending off my order for binding and truss rod today. when it comes i should have everything i need to start actually working the neck and finish it. im looking around for electronic setups and im thinking about the jimmy page les paul mod where every knob is a push/pull so i can get the most out of this guitar. the bridge is a 7 string hardtail and the fretboard is 25.5 in scale red morado. there is also a pic of the body im going to take a cast of for making a clear jem out of acrylic. it hasnt been finished yet.
  3. a higher gear ration means you can more finely tune the string with the tuner. i have seen a type of extremely expensive tuner that has a 40:1 ratio. i forget the name tho, but it wasnt a knob, it had a shaft that you would twist.
  4. the biggest step i guess is knowing when i have planned enough. i cant really draw a line between planning and cutting. so i guess this is what i have so far. i have my rough template made from thick cardboard and im going to trace that onto the neck wood, then i guess cut the sides of the neck out, then im going to measure and mark the thickness of the neck, route for the rod, cut out the chunk of wood along the back of the neck between the heel and back of the headstock, then im going to laminate the headstock ears, then ill start sanding down the sides of the neck through body portion and start carving at the back of the neck with my rasps and wood scrapers.
  5. to be quaint, id say that planet waves new ones look pretty cool. they trim the string and lock it in the post. i would try them out but i have to tune differently so often that i just havent gotten the chance. but i myself would go with the grovers, i have them on all of my guitars except the dano.
  6. i have planned the width of my neck and i am very sure it is right. what do i need to know before i cut the wood? how much should i add for a margin of error during sanding? should i add a little bit of space on the edges, if so how will i get the edge straight and lined back up when im done?
  7. Here is the exact wiring schematic that i was talking about. this is exactly it. i didnt know if it would work, but i guess this answers my question. this is the layout im gonna use in my korina rhoads.
  8. i know for a fact i could wire it all up, but im not quite sure if it would work together. i have seen schematics for splitting, series, and taps and even for what i think is an independent control with the volumes, but i have no idea if it would all work on the same guitar. i could do it in theory, but ive never done so much to one guitar, so i dont know if any of the switches would cancel each other out, especially having series and phase going on.
  9. i want to use a wiring schematic for a les paul. the only problem i see is i want to be able to independently use the volumes to help me control the middle position. i dont like the normal les paul wiring because it takes away from my control over the pickups. also i want to put dimarzios into it and coil tap. do most dimarzio seven string pickups have 4 conductors so i can tap them with a switch? also is it possible to use push/pull pots as both of my volume and one of my tone pots to have series/parallel and splits on both my pickups and a phase reversal for the middle position?
  10. ive really been thinking about doing an inlay on my headstock instead of a logo decal. it seems a bit classier and probably from the way it seems a hell of a lot easier to get away with because im already doing binding. ive searched and i cant seem to find a site with just plain designs that i could do. its obviously not as popular as tatoo flash, so i doubt artists are going to openly offer their own artwork to other people. my mom does stained glass and she always has cool pictures that can be done the same style as inlaying and there are open stain glass forums with free designs. i was wondering where you guys get your ideas and pictures.
  11. im having trouble figuring out what size binding i would need for doing the neck of my guitar. if i got it and it ended up being too tall could i trim it down? how would i do it? its going to be tortoise shell red so i cant really take electric sanders or saws to it cuz it might catch fire. the board is coming to me with the radius in it already so i know the binding is gonna have to be trimmed and sanded down.
  12. i want to put binding on my guitar but it comes in many thicknesses, .040, .060, .075, .090......... what is the size of average les paul binding?
  13. how would i go about installing this bridge. it only has four holes in it but it is a 7 string bridge. im not sure how i would make the holes and install strings.
  14. i use so much distortion that my guitar could be out of tune and you wouldnt know the difference. all that really breaks through the gain is the changing of the notes from one phrase to another. ive been using seven string ernie ball slinkys on my strat and just taking away the high e. im a perfectionist when it comes to my playin. even if the audience cant hear if my guitar is at its best i can. ive been thinking about just changing my string type altogether because the slinkys start out a little too bright and die on me after ive beat them to hell and back for one practice session. i have used zakk wylde sigs before for my down tuning and they worked pretty well just cost a tad bit more than slinkys.
  15. ill check into it, i hear hes got them for a good price. the problem isnt the price as much as just the temptation. i play extremely heavy death metal, so tone doesnt matter. but i change my strings a lot because they die after a few hours on my guitar. a few hours ago me and my friend were playing and his string snapped and it took him a bit of time before we could actual start playing again because he had to use the allen wrenches and stuff on his floyd. so i dont know if that is gonna fly well with my nonstop trem picking.
  16. im thinking about mounting a floyd on this seven string but i want to get the best deal. where would i find one, it doesnt even have to be a floyd but i want a 7 string locking tremelo that is a good deal.
  17. guitarbuild.com has rhoads plans in cad. i think you could print it out and just flip it over. when i made my plans, i took their cad plan and made it bigger to accomodate a seventh string. im not sure how accurate it is but there is a lot of room to play around with bridge positioning. and with a neck through you could make a step off near the neck so that the fretboard is higher than it should be and that will make the bridge sit lower so that you dont need an angle.
  18. how would i calculate my neck width if it is going to be a 2 inch nut with a bridge that has a string spread of 2 9/16 inch?
  19. im going to get the 7 string flatmount from warmoth, do i need to have a neck angle?
  20. what kind of pickups would work in a fender vi styled guitar. its set up with spacing similar to a guitar, but its one octave lower.
  21. ive always wondered what the point in curving the back and top was. does it have something to do with the sound waves hitting the curved surface and being reflected a certain way?
  22. well i didnt spend any money at all, i won it on ebay in the middle of the night for 10.50$ one night. and it black limba.
  23. i need to decide what kind of finish im gonna put on my korina rhoads. im thinking about a quilted veneer with a deep blood red stain and some kind of binding. what would you guys suggest? it can be anything as long as i can get some ideas.
  24. no, it isnt glued. not even close to that part. right now im sanding the edges of the wings while i wait for my fretboard and bridge and my new nut materials so i can start measuring my neck area and cutting. ill post some pics once i start on the neck contour and map out the taper.
  25. i believe george harrison had a rosewood tele at one point. they shot a video or something on top of a building. in the outakes and such you can hear him saying to paul "do you realize how bloody f-ckin heavy this thing is, ive hurt my damn back" i have a hard enough time playing a gretsch duo jet, i wouldnt dare go for something heavier than that, but you know if it sounds good and you want to get a hernea lifting it up than more power to ya. im just not a big fan of having a crane come to my gigs to pick the guitar up and place it on my shoulder.
