  1. There's a new product coming out that will help you with half your problem (turning the trem into a hardtail). I can't seem to remember the product name or the website address. Maybe one of the other members could help out here....
  2. There are a TON of threads/posts on this subject. Try a SEARCH for more information. THREAD CLOSED
  3. ...or sell them here and make some money back. I'm sure there's more than one person who'd like a deal on some of those tuners.
  4. Wait a second....I think I heard this somewhere before...oh yeah: Thought I was goin' crazy for a minute there.
  5. First song I ever learned was "Happy Trails". Some other easy, fun ones: - Peter Gunn Theme - All Along The Watchtower (non-Shawn Lane version for first timers) Regarding 'current'/punk-lite ones: - Anything Green Day (I think I figured out "When I Come Around" in about 3 minutes...and considering my ear & playing level, that's damn quick.) - Any Blink 182. The liner notes are more difficult than the songs. Slightly off-topic, but did anyone notice the Johnny Marr-type rhythm guitar track on "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"? Do you think that's a hat tip to Johnny/The Smiths, a blatant rip-off, or do you think they just plain don't have a clue and have never heard of Marr and/or The Smiths? I never did get around to learning "Smoke On The Water" or "Freebird". Scott- that was you? You're at every show I go to.
  6. Church- I guess our opinions are pretty darn close. The "locate strings in the middle of Austin" is more of a Spinal Tap reference than anything. :-) I personally haven't tried it, but I don't think you can use a D-Tuna with a SpeedLoader. Just from looking at specs, install instructions and pictures, I don't believe they'll match up. If someone has tested otherwise, please let us know. I'm not infected with the "how low can you go" disease sweeping the music world over the last few years. Mainly due to the fact that I'm not a great player, and by changing the tuning, I would be so lost Indiana Jones couldn't find me. I do realize, however, that there are guys out there that love doing the freaky tunings and dropping 5 full steps. :-) You bring up a good point that I don't think has been mentioned yet (or addressed by FR): Scale Length. For custom builders, being able to pick a scale length is great, but with the Speedloader, it's pre-determined. My testing is about the same as yours- a few hours one day; a few hours on another day...and neither on guitars that are owned by me. I didn't do any sustain checking- normal vs. SpeedLoader- so I don't have results for that. As you've said though, just viewing the construction and design, I see a couple places where sustain can be lost. Summary: If quick string changes are your thing, then the SpeedLoader has your name written all over it. If you need more versatility than that, and don't mind 'normal string change time', then I would look around at what else is out there.
  7. I'm not sure where this information was obtained, but it's false. Properly setup, all trems are stable. If it's not stable, then it's not setup correctly. This is true. It could even be faster than the Steinberger system. This is debatable as well, due to variables- how much play time, pick attack force, etc. Those aren't the only two drawbacks. - You can forget about any sort of alternate or dropped tuning. - Finding strings. Esp. in the middle of Austin. I'll call the Speedloader on this one too. I'll put it up against anyone of my LoPro trems. You try and knock mine out of tune, and I'll try the Speedloader. Even if it's a draw, the statement doesn't hold water. I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but you might want to do some of your own testing before putting this stuff up. Just a suggestion.
  8. Another option is to pick up a used/pre-owned Double Edge-equipped guitar and transplant the DE system from it. If you do, BE VERY CAREFUL!!! There are very small, solid wires under the back edge of the trem that can be broken very easily. I've seen some "blow out prices" on RG-620x guitars. You could then sell off the other parts (neck, body) to help pay for the rest of the project. :-) If you need any Double Edge help, feel free to email me- kevan@jemfest.com.
  9. As a double-neck geek, I'll admit that I touched myself more than once looking at Carvin catalogs back in the day. Here are some full guitar shots for you folks: -Black one: http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/images/88-dn612.html (with a Kahler- YIKES!) -White one: http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/images/91-dn612.html Back on topic.... I think a 12-inline Tele headstock *might* look cool, but it'd be tough to pull off. 6+6 is probably the way to go. Maybe just a slighlty oversized headstock, but retain the basic shape. Doc mentioned the string trees, but what about using a retainer bar instead? That'd cover all of the strings in one shot. Also, they're (sort of) height adjustable. Just a thought. In regards to small footprint tuners, what about the LSR 'gearless' ones that were around for a while? I think someone said they are still available, but I don't remember where. Idea: 6 regular tuners, and 6 LSR tuners. Top: All Normal Bottom: All LSR. ...or... -Top: Normal, LSR, Normal, LSR, Normal, LSR. -Bottom: Normal, LSR, Normal, LSR, Normal, LSR. Could look kinda cool, but I'm not sure about the spacing that's necessary. Ok...I'll stop thinkin' aloud. Good luck with the project! Don't forget to post some pics when it's done.
  10. At the very top of this topic, as a sticky, you'll find this thread: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=633 StewMac.com also has router templates for both types of trems. Print them out and check out the differences. Also, try a Search for more/quicker results.
  11. Thanks folks! I just want everyone to remember that this is YOUR forum. If you want it to be the best on the 'net, it's entirely up to you. We'll be here to power the engine and keep it moving forward. And don't forget this thread after the new mods have been onboard for a while. I'm sure they'd like to hear from you as well. Keep up the good work here, and on the guitars/basses/all the other gear!
  12. Congrats! Not only on the guitars thing, but for your nephew as well. Good drummers are tough to find these days.
  13. Wife: "So, is it dark?" Eddie: "No honey. It's 2 in the afternoon. The sun is still up." Fletch: "There we're in sort of a gray area..." Editor: "Well, how gray?" Fletch: "Charcoal."
  14. WILL SOMEONE *PUHLEASE* SHOW ME (and everyone else here) WHERE I WAS HARSH/MEAN/NASTY/UNKIND/OVER THE TOP/UNFRIENDLY/UNHELPFUL/UNPROFESSIONAL/ANYTHING OTHER THAN DECENT IN THAT POST?!!?!!? (That time I'm screaming...LOL) It's rhetorical, so don't bother with an answer. Thanks. Filthy- I don't want to be accused of being soft on rules violators (now there's a fruitless search. LMAO), so....I'm going to close your "#2" account. In the meantime, I'm going to get with the site owner and the other mods and figure out what we want to do regarding your plethora of rules violations within this thread. Your other account will remain working until further notice. Oh, and for the record, I'm not anonymous. Kevan is really my name. It's been my online 'ID' since, oh....1989 or so. Speaking of which....."Filthy McNasty"? Touche' (again).
  15. I thought you guys might dig on this pic: http://www.floydrose.com/images/bridges/Fl...irst-Bridge.jpg It's the first Floyd double-locking setup. Well, sorta.....LOL In regards to the "slippery nut" issue, there's some good advice here: graphite (that's what pencil lead is these days). Crushing up pencil lead into powder gives you a powdered lube that can be used all over the guitar. Auto shops sell tubes of powdered graphite as well. Just make sure it doesn't catch fire, and you don't eat it. Wash your hands thoroughly before eating anything after messing with graphite.
  16. I figured I'd answer a few questions... Erik, Sepultura and, Dan D: The "THREAD CLOSED" is done like it is for a many reasons. It's not meant as a "dis" or a "rip" or a "you're an idiot so you get bold, red letters". Admin editing/thread closing type is usually in red, to diferentiate it from standard posts. I've been doing it here for years, and this is the first time feelings were hurt over it. Trying to psychoanalyze an online forum member via their posts is like trying to find a video of Paris Hilton clothed. Trust me- if we did it in black, you'd have guys screaming "I got big, bold black letters saying my thread was closed! Nice warm welcome, jerks!". There's no winning...unless maybe it's purple. Mledbetter: Your #1 doesn't work. It's been tried both "ginger & spice and everything nice" and "lay down the law". That's the other problem with your suggested Moderator Translator- if you ASK someone to do something, they'll take offense. If you TELL someone to do something, they'll take offense. Yes- even if it's Carmen Electra dressed in SaranWrap asking/telling them to do it. I'm still looking for the 'terse' part of my post over there. Was it that I paraphrased HIS title in my posting? Now I'm a bad guy because someone doesn't think before they type? ...and regarding the "ounce of prevention..." line: Should Admin/Mods PM individuals about the Search feature and explain to them how to use it? No, and I'll tell you why- simple education. If I can teach 200 people something with one post, that saves me 199 PM's. Sorry Digideus, that's my theory and I'm stickin' to it. LOL (BTW- It's YOUR forum; not mine. I'm just here to keep LGM from posting hundreds of 'inlay porn' pics.) ..and lastly (I'm such a bad member for not even answering the initial question asked): Do I greet all members like that? Nope. Only the special ones. Hey Marz- in that pic you posted on the first page, did you notice that "before" is spelled incorrectly? Scott- You know me better than that. I didn't even get to the "pffffsssssttt" part of opening the can.
  17. Dan- While I understand what you're saying, I can't find any examples of "unprofessional" and/or "disrespectful" in my post here: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=15166 Personally, I think it's a lot kinder than "search first; thread closed". There's no sarcasm from me in that post, and I don't believe I was harsh- at all- whether people know me or not. If you see otherwise, please point it out. BTW- I didn't suspend that first account. I wanted to give him at least 24 hrs. to bury himself. As Algee pointed out...job well done.
  18. If you're on a forum, and post BEFORE doing even the slightest bit of searching, you're gonna get what's coming to you. Sorry, but online forums have been around long enough for people to know that. Hell, there's even a Flash cartoon about it. I've seen other forums where folks are suspended IMMEDIATELY if they fail to use the Search prior to posting. I mean, that makes me look like a pushover! I'm not going to apologize for telling some one to search then closing their thread (esp. when I point out the topic to search and give them a link to the Search button that's at the top of EVERY page). Thanks, man. It's appreciated. I'd love to explain this, but it's sort of a very long and convoluted inside joke, and one of the big reasons I retired from "that other site". It wasn't meant as a dis on you; it was meant as a rip on the admin over on that other site.....he being a professional wood grader and all....
  19. Congratulations! That little crack just bought you a 2 week read-only vacation! WooHoo! (P.S.- if you'd done a tad bit more searching, you'd see that your statement isn't accurate.) Your word; not mine. And here's the description taken from the Inlays and FINISHING section: "Discussion about making your guitar look its best." So my statement (and the title YOU posted in YOUR own thread) was correct, but that makes me the bad guy? Uhhh...ok. I even provided links to both the SEARCH and to the Inlays/Finishing section. I'm a jerk because you don't want to click on them? Yeah.
  20. If you're "sure this has been asked a million times....", then try a SEARCH in the Inlays/Finishing topic (where this question should have been posted initially). THREAD CLOSED.
  21. It depends on what you are looking for. The one in the auction isn't anything special to me (I string all of my guitars 'backward', with the ball end at the tuning machines), so I'd probably go with an OFR or a LoProfile FR. If you play live, A LOT (as in 200+ nights a year), then the Speedloader is cool. If you're a "casual jammer", it's a handy feature, but...... Personally, I prefer the LoProfile models. But that's just me.
  22. If you really, *really*, REALLY need to change strings uber-quick, then the Speedloader is pretty cool. That's it's only real benefit over a real OFR type trem. There are a few other playability issues with the Speedloader system, but I'm sure a Search here will net you those. The one listed in that FleaBay auction is NOT a Speedloader (and the guy needs to figure out which way he wants to spell "tremolo". LOL). Dreamland guitars has closed it's doors (see Announcments section), but I'm sure there are other dealers out there, maybe even a few on FleaBay.
  23. If you're talking about an Ibanez Lo-Pro Edge, you're looking at a big huge party. The only thing less of a drop-in would be a Kahler. - The LoPro inserts will need to be pulled, those holes filled, then new holes drilled for the SpeedLoader inserts. - The routing, if I remember correctly, is VERY different. You will have a monster gap in the back, and will probably need to touch the sides with a router (or you might have a gap on the sides. The LoPro is a pretty 'big' trem). - The nut will have to be changed on the neck. - Locating strings in the middle of Austin. If you're talking about a low-profile FR trem, then I'm not sure. There's a thread here about trem dimensions here: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=633 I'm not sure if the SpeedLoader is in there or not, but it's something you'll need to check into. Read it. Learn it. Drill it.
  24. Cool. Too bad they're in the UK. Let me know what they have in stock. Maybe I'll order one or two with ya. BTW- I think I forgot to email Scott and let him know that the unit arrived and is now in a new home. THANKS SCOTT!
