  1. well i'm definitely going to have to try that just to hear what it sounds like. thanks again.
  2. thanks..that's really what i needed to know. i'm going to tap the humbucker and got curious about how much practical difference in volumn there will be when i play the middle pickup (single coil) and the neck with just one coil operating when i use them together.
  3. if you have a single coil with an output of 145 mV and a resistance of 8.28k and a humbucker with an output of 272mV with a resistance of 8.26k and you coil tap the humbucker would the resulting single coil of the humbucker come close to matching the output of the single coil? in other words is it a true equation of one coil equals half of the output of the two together?
  4. thanks ansil..did you really mean a 1mfd or a .01?
  5. thanks for the response lovekraft. the fellow at allparts said, "it makes the high end a little smoother" and i assumed what you said is what he meant...i think.
  6. my current project is going to have a dimarzio paf in the neck and bridge position (joe and fred) with a virtual vintage blues in the middle position. i understand that the early les pauls had 300k pots with their pafs and that was one of the reasons for their unique sound. any of you have any practical experience with them and if so, can you describe the difference between the 300k and 500k sound?
  7. pickup rings made from leftover or contrasting wood look great and give the guitar a great custom look. i even make my control covers from contrasting wood. the only thing about routing deeper pockets to keep in mind is that you probably want to route shallower than your final depth first and then take the rest out. it's easier on your bits and depending on the length of the cutting area of the bit you might not be able to cut full depth the first time anyway. good luck and post some pics when you're finished.
  8. i usually route my pickup pockets fairly deep to have plenty of room for the adjustment screws. you can route to withing 1/4" to 3/8" of the bottom with no problem. on your question about the single coil i'd just suggest that you route the smallest pocket that you can fit you pickup in. are you going to freehand you neck pocket or do you have a guide? by the way, thats some beautiful wood. should make a great guitar!!
  9. i took an old cable and cut one end. added a couple of alligator clips to attach to the leads then i can do the screwdriver tap or hold it over the strings and get some idea of how it sounds. i've been trying to come up with a way to swap out pickups in different configurations and hadn't thought of routing all the way through. with a couple of plexiglass jigs to hold strat or tele or less paul or whatever you could pop one in and then try all the trick wiring you wanted. great idea!
  10. thanks lovekraft. i thought it would but it never hurts to check. i've got to close up the old guitar shop now and run but i'm looking forward to participating in the board and if any of you have another opinion about my question ill check in in the morning. later unclej
  11. hey folks..newby here and i've got a question about wiring a single coil for phase reversal. my current project will feature two humbuckers with a single coil in the middle position. each will be controlled by an on/off/on mini-toggle. the humbuckers will be wired parallel/off/series and i want the single coil wired normal/off/reverse phase. my question is this. on a dpdt on-on you wire hot to the left center pole, ground to the right center pole. you wire a jumper from upper left to lower right and that goes to ground. you wire another jumper from upper right to lower left and that is your hot out. if i wire an on/off/on switch the exact same way does the middle position actually give me off and do the first and third positions give me what i want. if not, how should i wire it. thanks for the help. unclej
