  1. I don't record myself because i don't have a band at the moment, but i record my cousin’s band. The way we do it is, mic up the drums and put the guitar through a Vamp and record those together. Then when we are happy with the drums, we'll scrap the Vamp track and mic up his guitar. I used to use amp modelling a lot for guitars, but now i prefer the sound of a real amp. I use a Bass V-Amp for the actual bass though, because they don't have a very good amp. For software, i use Tracktion 3 (thanks to GregP for recommending Tracktion in the first place) and hardware i use a FocusRite 8 channel preamp into 2 Delta 1010s into my PC.

  2. I have that book and its a great read.

It took me ages to get a decent kick. When i was using two mics it would sound really good, but when i started using 6 and mic'ing up the bass drum seperately it sounded flat and dull. I usually add a little compression to my kicks to give them a little bit more life.

  3. I used to use 2 mics for drums, but now i use 6 and i prefer that sound. You can get some good recordings only using 2 mics, but i like to EQ all the kit separately. I also prefer to record at 96KHz. I used to record at 44KHz but for some reason it would always sound muddy. I think i've finally got a set-up worked out that suits my needs =D

  4. I thought i would add this in here instead of creating a new thread. I recently got hold of an original DOD FX86 Death Metal and a DOD FX86B Death Metal (re-issue of the FX86) I must say i much prefer the re-issue. For some reason its a lot more clear and sturdy.

I now think i have too many effects pedals, still at least i'm covered for most situations >_>

  5. The Shure is the old standby for most of the world. I'm a big fan of not using whatever equipment the "others" are using, so I'd like to shy away from this if at all possible.

No offence, but that's kind of stupid. If it does its job well and the majority of people use it and its been used on hundreds, if not thousands of albums then why not use it? Being different for the sake of being different is pointless.

That being said, have you looked at the Shure Beta57a?

  6. On my amps i usually just turn all the EQ and presence controls up to 10. If i have a pedal with EQ i usually put the bass up full, and just turn the treble down to about 8.

I'm not a fan of having more EQ on an amp because its just adding more things that arent really needed. IMHO, the nicest amps with the nicest tone usually have as little controls as possible. My 1/2watt Gilmour only has tone and volumes and it sounds awesome.

  7. I compared the KRKs to some M1 Active 520s, and the KRKs sounded really bright and distinct, i really loved them. The Active 520s weren't as bright, but sounded just as distinct, plus they were £100 cheaper. I'll keep an eye out on the bay for the KRKs, but for now, the Active 520s are great!!
