  1. I'm no expert, but if an amp comes with EL34s chances are it will need BIASing for 6L6s. I know there are a few amps that can use both (the Laney GH50L for one) but they are few and fare between. Some amps do have a trimpot installed so all you have to go is find the right voltage and turn the trimpot to it, others are a little more complex and may require soldering of resistors.

Even a 20watt valve amp is hard to push at reasonable volumes, i've got a 1/2watt valve amp and i can't turn that past 2 without it becoming over-loud.

You might want to ask Wez about metal sounding amps. I know he likes loud (as in 100watt +, more head room) because he doesn't like the sound of power amps breaking up...all preference.

  2. I've just built myself the Gilmour Jr. 1/2watt Kit and it does require some soldering skills.

I totally agree with Wez and mikhailgtrski. Just because you have some soldering skill, doesn't mean you can go build yourself an amp out of thin air. It requires a lot of patience, time, planning and research.

  3. Okay so I have a Crate FXT65 combo amp. It's 65 watts with one 12" speaker. Could I clip the wires going from the amp to the speaker and take out the whole "amp" assembly, then wire the output wires to a jack so I could use it as a head more or less instead of a combo? Would this be possible?
Yes, it is possible. Make sure that your new speaker cabs are wired correctly for the correct ohms rating for the AMP and the speakers are of the correct ohms rating to acheive that.

Here are some sites with basic knowledge of speaker wiring.

Those links are pure gold. Cheers for that MiKro!
