  1. I had a thread on this in the Inlays/Finishing section, but I thought I would share this here instead since it's probably where it really belongs at this point. Basically I bought a Strat body off of ebay, stripped it down, put a fabric top over it and did a few other things. You can check it out here: http://www.diyguitarist.com/Guitars/SuperStrat.htm I just have to finish up the neck and I'll be ready to be able to actually play this thing. So far, about 4 weeks have passed since I got the body. Let me know what you think.
  2. Well, now it's hanging to dry in my garage. Fortunately, there is no wind at all today, so dust isn't much of a problem. I think I'll let it hang for about 48 hours before I touch it. Then I'm going to buff it, put all the parts on it and get the body to the point where I am just attaching the neck to it. It's been more work than I thought it would be, but I am happy with the end result. I wanted something different, so I got that for sure.
  3. Got some new pics for y'all. While I was waiting for the cold front to clear out of here, I got most of the electronics wired up - as far as I can go without actually installing it in the body. That was on Monday/Tuesday. I did the suburst and painted the cavities Wednesday afternoon and on Thanksgiving morning. I used the "poor boy sunburst" method in the tutorial section. It turned out pretty well considering that I never tried to do anything like this before. I'm pretty handy with a can of spray paint, though. Here is what I have so far. Next, I will apply the clearcoat. Then I'll be concentrating on the neck...
  4. Possible, but if you don't wire the speakers up correctly, you can damage your output transformer. Do you know how the speakers in the amp are wired up? (ohm ratings and whether parallel or series wired) The other thing I would need to know is the rating of the new speakers in terms of ohms... BTW, yes, that would be Celestion speakers.
  5. You know Paul Perry?! That's cool. He is a regular over at Aron's stompbox forum.
  6. I would recommend grounding the bridge. Not doing so presents a safety hazard to you. Read this: http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/electr...afety/index.php
  7. Well, I'm flattered that you're flattered! The site will have been up for one year this Christmas. I have received quite a few emails from people all around the world about various things on my site. Kinda cool!
  8. OK, so I have an unfinished maple neck that I am going to do a tung oil finish on. So here is my questions: 1. I have read that clear finishes won't work over a tung oil finish because they peel off, etc. Is that true of polyurethane as well? 2. Will a headstock decal work on a tung oil finish? If not, how would one apply the decal to the headstock? Any help much appreciated.
  9. Oh yeah, Mark Hammer's "Woody" has gotten mostly good reviews over at Aron's stompbox forum. I thought about building it at one time, but never did. When I built my TS808 clone, I put it into a Hammond 1590BB enclosure. Here's a picture of it: http://www.diyguitarist.com/Images/TS808.jpg You could also rotate the enclosure to do something similar to this: http://www.diyguitarist.com/Images/ST1590BB-Exterior.JPG
  10. Sure. Here is two circuits that I have heard mostly good things about: http://geofex.com/PCB_layouts/Layouts/pt2399.pdf Part of the cool http://www.geofex.com website AND http://generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/a...8_schematic.pdf Part of of the cool http://www.generalguitargadgets.com website Here is where you can buy BBD chips: http://smallbearelec.com/Ordering/ICsDelay.htm Actually, I like this one a lot myself: http://www.diyguitarist.com/Images/ArionSAD-1.gif You can still get the chips at smallbear for $16 each. (!)
  11. Something that might be interesting is to have a hybrid tube/SS preamp, perhaps switchable between the two and being able to combine them as well. I like the idea of a built-in delay. That's one effect I almost can't live without. AFAIK, the delay would most likely have to be digital as it is hard to get any long delay times (> 300mS) out of an analog (BBD) chip.
  12. It took me a few days to read through all 23 pages of this thread (!), and I found it to be quite interesting. I don't follow everything completely as far as theory goes, but it sure seems to have some real potential, as the sound clips speak for themselves. I hope you get it perfected. I think it could be a marketable alternative to the ebow and sustainiac pickups. I like how the ebow sounds, but I find it to be a PITA to use one. I certainly would love to have a built in gizmo that gave me that same effect!
  13. I need to get a Fender headstock decal for my new project. Is there a place that sells those? I thought I read somewhere that you had to go to a Fender dealer to get one of those... is that true?
  14. Thanks! I think it is rad. It's going to look very cool when it is all finished. I have had a lot of obstacles to overcome thus far, one thing or another had to be modified a little bit or tweaked. But, it's coming together nicely. Sorry, no new pics at this time. It still looks the same as the last couple of pics on the page, except that I have sanding sealer on it now. I can't really paint the cavities or the sunburst right now because it has been unseasonably cold and wet here this for this time of the year... I did populate the pickgaurds this morning, though. The next step is to solder in the preamp circuit.
  15. Well, I have applied the sanding sealer, done the sanding bit, etc. I can not feel or "see" where the fabric ends and where the body starts, so now I am ready to do the sunburst and paint the body cavities. Now, if it would only stop raining... EDIT: I forgot to mention that it took way less sanding sealer than I expected to do this part. Maybe 2-3 ounces of the stuff did the trick, and after the sanding, it's quite smooth. Should turn out well.
  16. I'm going to try doing a veneer top sometime. The staining/dying part of it is what scares me...
  17. Just take the wiper of the pot and insert a switch between the tone cap and the black ice circuit. All that is needed is a on/on SPST switch, one side will have the cap to ground and the other side would have the diodes to ground. Middle lug goes to the wiper of the pot.
  18. There's a tutorial on doing a veneer top in the tutorials section of this site. I personally wouldn't use the sanding sealer, I would just glue it to raw wood. The top and back shouldn't be too hard, but the sides will be a little bit tricky to do...
  19. Thanks. I still think that is one of the coolest patterns that I have ever seen. It actually is from an Izod shirt that I bought like 10 years ago and wore to death. It's actually a little faded and I don't wear it anymore because of that, but after adding two coats of sanding sealer it looks like new material again. I have finished prepping the back of the body - sanded it down, etc. Today I will start on the front. I'll keep y'all posted on my progress. EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I'm done, the finish will be about half as thick as the finish I stripped off of the guitar. I imagine that can only help it to have more sustain, etc.
  20. I actually could see how fanned frets could make string bending easier the way y'all explained it. From my research, I am convinced that the Buzz Feiten works, and well. I also wonder why more guitar manufacturers don't use a zero fret... I mean it's not as sophisticated as the Buzz Feiten system, but it would go a long ways towards helping get better intonation, I would think.
  21. Well, I have asked around some more at various guitar related forums, and I decided to go with my original idea for the finish on the body based on mostly positive feedback. (I was vascillating on doing the fabric or not) You can see my progress so far here It won't be too long now before I am finished with this project. I am undecided if I am going to actually use Ansil's sustain circuit thingie, though. So far, I have heard only one "build report" on that circuit and it didn't sound very positive. I tried contacting Ansil about it, but I haven't heard back from him on it...
  22. I hadn't even considered string bending. Hard to visualize how that works with a fret going off at an angle... I'm just going to have see if anyone here in town has an example for me to try. (Probably not, but I can always dream)
  23. The DiMarzio FRED will give you great shred sounds, at least in my experience. A lot of the sound you want depends on your equipment and how you EQ it, too.
