  1. yeah that's what's wrong. I just decided to pitch it, it's not like i can't buy another one fairly cheap. not worth the hassel and cost of a pickup repair man. thanks for the advice though.
  2. Well that's kinda the problem lol The wires going to the polls are gone. I'm kinda debating on whether I even want to mess with it or just buy a new pickup.
  3. I'm trying to find a place or an individual that has SD Pearly Gates Pickups for sale at a reasonable price. Or pickups similiar to the PG's. Thanks in advance
  4. Alright I have a single coil pickup and the wires from the coil itself are gone, what's the easiest way to fix this pickup? Is it even possible? Will I have to unwrap the coil in order to find these wires?
  5. I understand what you're saying there. A guy in the next town over from me has a little shop that he's had for say maybe 45 years now?!? Well he handles mainly acoustics he has alot of older, good quality acoustics that he can't sell. He said that most of the younger crowd that comes in there want something flashy and new. While the older acoustics are far better then the "New York Pro's" that he sells, he just can't seem to sell them. I talked to him awhile back and he's willing to sell me most of the older guitars and a pretty decent price. I figured it would just be a good investment. But these older acoustic are 5 times the guitars compared to the cheapies.
  6. LMAO Right on lol I know what you mean. I'm just helping her out ya know? I was just kinda curious what everyone else thought about it. I mean some people you just can't explain things to, and others catch on rather easily, then you have the people that have to find out first hand and spending double the money because they end up buying the junk guitar then couple days or so later they buy the more expensive guitar. I'm just trying to help. I've been playing for over 13 years now, but even when I first started playing I wouldn't even think about buying a cheapo, probably because I've been around music. instruments, and bands my whole life. Esteban LMAO I think that sums up the "Esteban" guitar lol but don't forget "it shines like a diamond"
  7. Alright I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right forum, and it may have already been posted or at least something of the same nature. But I can't help but voice my opinion on this matter, and that's just what it is "my opinion", although others may feel the sameway about the matter. Here recently a friend of a friend decided that she wanted to buy a guitar and start learning how to play. She absolutely loves acoustic guitars thus she wants to learn how to play on one. I advised my friend when he told about this that I would be more then willing to help her find a decent, yet affordable guitar for her to purchase and learn on. My full intention was to help her out as much as possible with making a good decision and keep her away from the "plywood" and "cheapo" guitars that won't stay in tune, action way to high, so on and so forth. (You know what I mean?) I don't like to see anybody get taken by some sales rep that's just there to make the sale and send you on your way. Or even worse.... I talked to her and she said she just couldn't afford anything to expensive at the moment, but would save some money and get back with me in the near future. So I'm thinking that she's going to call me in a week or so and tell me that she wants the guitar. Boy oh boy was I wrong!!!! Turns out she went to WAL-MART and bought a f-act acoustic.......It was only like $69.00 she told me. Now here's my question, for a beginner which do you think would be better, a $69.00 cheapo that's not going to last more then a month or so and the actions going to be so high that it's not even funny, or shell out anywhere from $100-$250 for a decent acoustic that might last longer and is going to give alot better sound? For a beginner wouldn't you think a guitar with moderate action, good tone, sustain, and playability would make them want to continue to play? Instead of spending $69. on a guitar that hurts their fingers so bad that they never want to play again? Now all this said I have talked to her and she has thrown the cheapo away, yes that's right she just threw it away lol. And now she is playing my acoustic until hers comes in this week. Just some rambling that doesn't ammount to much but that's my $.02 anyway. What do you all think about it? Which is better for a beginner? And why is it that hardly any of the major companies are worried about quality, but instead are worried about quanity?
  8. Have you looked at Brian's site for a piece of maple? http://www.universaljems.com/cart/veneer.htm
  9. I'm not sure why your teacher is saying that, maybe because you're a beginner but I could be wrong there. I don't see any problem with using the custom lights. I use mediums on my acoustic and get a great sound, great playing, and they bend fairly easy. For a beginner it might be a little rough on the fingers at first but if you play and practice regularly it shouldn't take long to build up some good calusses(spelling?!?).
  10. Thank you Brain, finished now. I think the end result will be well worth the time it's taking me to do this and do it right. One more question though. Can the horns be cut or shaped differently? It's strat style body, rear rout. Kinda give it more of a squared look instead of the rounded body that it is now. Thanks in advance Lizard_King
  11. Thanks unclej I'll be posting again very soon. Would everyone to see my guitar hopefully I will have a cam or scanner by the time I get it finished lol. Financially I think I can swing it, I have a few family memebers that are willing to put up a little to help me along the way. This has been my dream for a long time now. I've always wanted to own my own shop. I'll let you know as soon as I get thew tax number back, should be any day now. I'll take all of the suggestion into consideration and I'm going to sit down and figure out just what type of crowd I want to appeal to. I think that more expensive guitars and customs would have to be special order instead of keeping them in stock, but at the sametime maybe it would be a good idea to keep a few in the show room?!? Still not sure what amps to go with, or who to get ahold of to find out about them. I'm heading out for now. Will post more a little later this evening. Thank you everyone. Lizard_King
  12. Thank you Drak, sorry it took my this long to reply. I've been rather busy,(visiting local pawn shops ). Bought a few guitars fairly cheap, but will need some attention. Visited Brian's site and will probably buy some veneer off of there very soon. In the near future I will also be donating to the site. I was wondering what anyone in here thinks of opening their own shop. Because I'm seriously considering it. The closest shop around here is at least 45 minute drive. I think it would go over rather well. I open for any suggestions, tips, pointers. Anything basically lol. Very nice site guys, very helpful and informative. Nice quick responces from people who actually know what they are talking about. I'm impressed, and I really enjoy the site. I've read just about every single topic. Keep up the good work. Thank you, Lizard_King
  13. Just thought it would be a good idea being as this is one of the best looking pieces of veneer that I have ever seen(seriously it is). That on top of the issue of not having a decent budget to buy veneer I figured it would be alright. It appears that I was wrong. Does anyone know any sites that have moderatly priced veneers? lol Thanks for the quick reply
  14. This is probably a stupid question, but I'm refinishing a guitar of mine and wanted to go with a figured veneer top on it. I've been looking around and pricing different tops, but today I was at a friends house and he has an old buffet with a very beautifully figured veneer on it. He told me I could have the buffet if I could use it. I was wondering what is the easiest way to remove the veneer from the buffet? And how can I get it back to it's original wood color so that I can dye it as I wish. any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appericiated. Thank you in advance Lizard_King
  15. I would like to start off by saying this forum has been very helpful, and everyones tutorials are great. It's hard to find people willing to help others anymore. Great job guys, keep up the good work and I am very very impressed. Now onto my question, I'm refinishing my washburn and I was wondering what the easiest way to remove the wood sealant is. I probably messed up by taking the paint off with paint stripper but it also removed part of the sealant as well. So now I need to get the rest of the sealant off, but I'm afraid if I use stripper it will mess the wood up maybe? Any suggestions would be great. I'm still new to all this and thought it would be a pretty kewl idea being as the old finish was cracked and looked like a jigsaw puzzle lol I'm going to go over the wood with a dye, even if I don't put a quilt or flame top on it. This leads to my second question. I've read about doing black and then the color of your choice on quilt, but i was wondering if doing it on regular wood might bring out the grain a little better? Any suggestions on what to do would be great. These questions have probably been answered already and I have probably just over looked them in the forums and tuts. Thank you in advance everyone and keep up the good work. Love the guitars and basses I have seen on this site, they have inspired me alot.
  16. I will give you umm $35.00 for it right now. Interested?
  17. You're talking about acoustic guitar pickups, I have a New York Pro acoustic that was givin to me by a friend who gave up playing. This is one of the many acoustics I have. Although it's a cheap guitar(very cheap i might add lol) it had a great sound to it and for some reason I like the action on it. I was wanting to add a pickup in it just in case I decide to plug it in sometime but I didn't want to spend $50+ on a pickup for this cheapo. So......I picked up a piezo transducer at the local Radio Shack and as well as an output, volume, and tone controls but they weren't purchased at Radio Shack lol. I installed in in the soundhole by placing a shim of wood in between the braces and gluing it into place. It's not a bad way to amplify your guitar. Though now I'm trying to find a failry cheap preamp to install maybe even an eg, but once again I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on this thing, it's just an old beater. I have 27 other guitars to worry about, so this one is just a play toy or experiment you might say. Any suggestions would be great. Thank You everyone
